World No Tobacco Day is celebrated across the world today i.e. on 31st May with the aim of getting rid of the extremely deadly addictions related to tobacco like smoking. Dr. Ved Prakash, head of Pulmonary and Critical Care Emergency Department of Uttar Pradesh’s largest medical university
,
Question : What impact do you see of this initiative so far in Uttar Pradesh?
answer : 80 lakh deaths occur every year worldwide due to tobacco consumption. If we talk about Uttar Pradesh, here too 2 lakh deaths every year are the result of tobacco consumption. Apart from this, an economic burden of 14 lakh crores is also caused by it. Tobacco consumption is causing all kinds of cancers from head to toe. This is the main reason for oral cancer. The world’s third most fatal disease like COPD is also the result of this. Cases of heart attack are seen 6 times more in smokers. Brain strokes are also seen 2 to 3 times more. It even contributes to infertility and impotence.
Men who smoke have a 60% higher risk of impotence. Women have a 30% higher risk of infertility.
Dr. Ved Prakash had a special conversation with Dainik Bhaskar on World No Tobacco Day.
Question :You have been working in UP for many years? Even during the time of Corona, you have played a big role in keeping the people here healthy. How would you like to take the fight against tobacco forward?
answer : Look..for this the society will have to come forward. The government is getting revenue and people are getting cheap drugs. To get out of this problem, everyone’s support will be needed. People’s support will have to be taken. This will have to be given the form of a movement, only then the dream of a tobacco free India will come true. When everyone will come together, the pressure on the government to take tough decisions will also increase. If everyone is educated, then the tobacco eradication campaign will definitely gain momentum.
Question : According to you, what would be the 3 important steps to get rid of tobacco? Which are very important
answer : Through you, I want to tell everyone that it is very important to keep the coming generation i.e. children away from this. Children and youth have to be saved from tobacco addiction at any cost. The elders in the house should not consume tobacco in front of the children and should not ask them for things like cigarettes or bidis. I want to tell the teachers in the schools that they should definitely make the children aware about the ill effects of tobacco and tell them about its fatal consequences. Children should also stop those who smoke and consume tobacco in the house.
Secondthis is the tobacco industry, it is proving the saying ‘income is 25 paise and expenditure is one rupee’ true. Earlier this income was 8 paise and expenditure is one rupee. That is, the revenue received from this is very small in front of the government’s expenditure. In view of the deaths caused by its consumption, the government needs to take strict steps. Also, whatever rules have already been made regarding tobacco, they should be strictly implemented. On the lines of alcohol free state, there is a need to make tobacco free state and tobacco free country.
thirdI want to tell the youth that due to smoking you are becoming a victim of impotence and infertility. Even premature deliveries are increasing. This means that just because of smoking you have put the future generation in danger. Whereas I can say with confidence that when you consume it for the first time, you will not like it. Due to continuous consumption, it becomes a habit and then slowly it takes the form of a disease, because you are unable to leave it.

On Thursday, Dr. Ved Prakash along with many experts at KGMU talked about the harmful effects of tobacco.
Question : We have heard that you have freed a cabinet minister from his smoking addiction, how?
Answer: It is not right to take names. He is still a cabinet minister in the government. Many years ago, he came to me for a checkup one day. I requested him to tell me that his addiction to cigarettes or smoking is now becoming very dangerous, it is converting into COPD. In response to this, he very casually said that he has quit. He told me so easily that at first I thought that this would probably be something like what politicians promise. But today I am happy to tell you that more than ten years have passed but after that day he has completely quit cigarette smoking. He has not touched tobacco in any form. There are people with such willpower among us. So I want to tell everyone that all kinds of facilities are available in KGMU to help those who want to quit tobacco consumption. They will be treated in pulmonary care. De-addiction clinics are also being run, one just needs to come forward with strong willpower.
