APPOINTMENT
1. NS Venkatesh becomes Chairman of Athachi Finserv: On June 1, Athachi Finserv appointed financial professional NS Venkatesh as Chairman. Venkatesh was earlier the Chief Executive Officer (CEO) of the Association of Mutual Funds in India (AMFI).
NS Venkatesh has been a part of AMFI’s ‘Mutual Funds Sahi Hai’ campaign.
- NS Venkatesh was the CEO of AMFI from 2017 to 2023.
- Prior to this, he was the executive director of Lakshmi Vilas Bank.
- Venkatesh has served as Executive Director and Chief Financial Officer at IDBI Bank.
- NS Venkatesh has over 40 years of work experience in the finance sector.
- Athachi Finserv provides investors the facility of planning for investments like mutual funds, equities.
2. CG Karhadkar became the director of IGCAR: On May 31, Chandrashekhar Gaurinath Karhadkar took over as the new director of the Indira Gandhi Centre for Atomic Research (IGCAR), Kalpakkam. He was appointed in place of B. Venkataraman, who retired recently.

- Earlier, Chandrashekhar was the Director of the Reactor Group of Bhabha Atomic Research Centre (BARC), Mumbai.
- He joined Reactor Operation Division, Reactor Group, BARC in 1988.
- He has worked in BARC in various positions for 36 years.
- Under the leadership of Chandrashekhar, for the first time in the country, a plan was prepared to shut down a large reactor like CIRUS.
- Chandrashekhar graduated from the 31st batch of BARC Training University.

3. Puppeteer Maguni Charan Kuanar passes away: On June 1, Maguni Charan Kuanar, a famous puppeteer from Keonjhar, Odisha, died at the age of 87. In 2023, he was awarded the Padma Shri for keeping the art of rod puppetry alive.

- Maguni Charan Kuanar was awarded the Odisha Sangeet Natak Academy Award in 2012.
- In 2004, he was also awarded the Central Sangeet Natak Academy Award.
- Maguni had also received the Kavi Samrat Upendra Bhanja Award from the Odisha Sangeet Natak Academy.
- He is also an actor, painter, writer, clay sculptor and wood carver.
- At the age of 15, he started learning puppetry with instructor Makardhwaj.
- He has performed art in many cities including New Delhi, Kolkata, Mumbai, Guwahati, Meghalaya, Bengaluru.
- Maguni Charan Kuanar was born on 12 February 1937 in Odisha.

4. BFI takes membership of World Boxing: On May 31, the Boxing Federation of India (BFI) withdrew from World Boxing. This decision was taken after a warning from the International Olympic Committee (IOC).
BFI President Ajay Singh said that maintaining boxing’s Olympic status is vital for the sport and hence we are happy to be associated with World Boxing.
- The IOC had said that if the Indian federation remains associated with the International Boxing Association (IBA), then the sport could be removed from the 2028 Los Angeles Olympics.
- BFI president Ajay Singh said the federation has not disassociated itself from the suspended IBA.
- The committee had derecognised IBA in 2019 due to finance and governance issues.
- World Boxing is formed in April 2023.
- Its chairman is former IBA presidential contender Boris van der Vorst.
- Boxing events at the Paris Olympics, starting on July 26, will be held under the supervision of the IOC.
- The International Boxing Association will not be a part of the Olympic Games for the second consecutive time.
5. Nishant got India its first quota in men’s boxing: On May 31, Nishant Dev secured a ticket to the Olympic Games by reaching the semi-finals of the ongoing Boxing Olympic Qualifiers in Bangkok. He has become the first Indian men’s boxer to secure a quota for the Games to be held in Paris.

- With Nishant reaching the semi-finals, India secured the 61st quota for the Paris Olympics.
- This time he defeated Vasile Cebotari of Moldova 5–0 in the quarter-finals in the 71 kg weight category.
- World Championship bronze medallist Nishant had missed out on a quota place by a narrow margin in the previous qualifiers.
- In this way, India secured the fourth quota place for the Olympics in boxing.
- Before Nishant, women boxer Nikhat Zareen (50kg) had won the quota.
- Preet Pawar (54kg) and Lovlina Borgohain (75kg) have also secured quota places.
