Amit Panghal secures quota for Paris Olympics: Second Indian men’s boxer to qualify, had won gold in Commonwealth

Amit Panghal defeated China’s Liu Chuang 5-0 to secure an Olympic ticket.
Indian boxer Amit Panghal has qualified for the Paris Olympic Games. Panghal defeated China’s Liu Chuang 5-0 during the men’s 51 KG quarter-finals at the World Boxing Qualifier in Bangkok on Sunday to secure an Olympic ticket.
Panghal has become the second men’s boxer to qualify for the Olympics. Earlier, Nishant Dev had secured the Olympics quota by defeating Vasil Caboteri of Moldova 5-0 in the 71KG category.
Amit Panghal also won gold in the Commonwealth Games held in Birmingham, England. He won gold in the 51KG category.
Zareen-Preeti and Lovlina have also qualified
Amit Panghal will be joined in boxing by Nikhat Zareen (women’s 50kg), Preeti Pawar (women’s 54kg) and Tokyo Olympics bronze medallist Lovlina Borgohain (women’s 75kg), who secured their berths for Paris through victories at the Asian Games 2022.
Lost in the first round at Tokyo Olympics
Amit Panghal entered the 2020 Tokyo Olympics as the world number 1 in the 52kg category. However, he was defeated 1-4 by Rio Olympics silver medallist Yuberjen Martinez.
Won gold in National Championship in 2016
Panghal won the gold medal in the National Championship for the first time in 2016. After that he never looked back. He joined the Indian Army in 2018 and started training at the Army Sports Institute in Pune. He soon got the benefit of this and Panghal won the silver medal in the 2018 Commonwealth Games.
He won the gold medal in the 2018 Asian Games held after the Commonwealth Games.
Won three medals in Asian Championship
Panghal won 3 medals in the Asian Championships. In 2017, he won a bronze medal in the Asian Championships held in Tashkent. In 2019, he won a gold medal in the Asian Championships held in Bangkok.
