Not taking proper precautions during the prevailing heatwave conditions can lead to various health issues, including exhaustion, heart attacks, lung diseases, kidney problems and even life threatening conditions.

As the mercury level rises above 50 degrees, it becomes important to take good care of our health and protect ourselves from extreme heat conditions. With several states across the country witnessing high temperatures and heat waves, many people may face several health issues.

Not taking proper precautions during the prevailing heatwave conditions can lead to various health issues, including exhaustion, heart attacks, lung diseases, kidney problems and even life-threatening conditions.

Another significant health concern arising from extreme heat waves is eye stroke, which could potentially result in a loss of vision. The hot weather may induce dehydration, hindering blood flow to the tissues in front of the optic nerve, thus resulting in a loss of eyesight.

Symptoms of eye stroke-

  1. Blurred vision: If a person experiences a sudden blurry vision or a decrease in visual clarity in one or both eyes, it could be a symptom of an eye stroke.
  2. Sudden vision loss: The most common symptom, sudden partial or complete blindness, signals an eye stroke.
  3. Distorted vision: Vision becoming wavy or straight lines appearing suddenly.
  4. Blind spots: A sudden blackout or shadows in the field of vision.

Is there any treatment for this?

  1. Seek medical help: The most important thing when you experience a loss of vision is to visit your doctor who will provide you with the necessary treatment.
  2. Medication: Certain medicines can lower intraocular pressure and dissolve blood clots, but only take them under medical supervision.
  3. Hyperbaric oxygen therapy: Hyperbaric Oxygen Therapy (HBOT) helps increase the amount of oxygen reaching the retina and can also make the arteries wider, which could result in clear eyesight.
  4. Surgery: In severe cases, health experts might recommend undergoing surgical procedures to get your eyesight back.
  5. Ocular Massage: It is a simple procedure to reduce the pressure inside your eyes which could result in a clear vision.

How can it be prevented?

  1. Stay hydrated: The most important thing during the summer season is to stay hydrated throughout the day. Eyes rely on water and keep them lubricated in the form of tears, so you must consume enough water.
  2. Avoid sun exposure: Minimise outdoor activities on sunny days whenever possible.
  3. Use protective gear: Wear sunglasses, and hats, or carry umbrellas while going out.
  4. Maintain a healthy lifestyle: Consume water-rich foods and those high in vitamins, particularly Vitamin A found in papaya, mango, sweet potatoes and carrots.
  5. No smoking: Avoid smoking as it can increase the risk of cataracts and dry eye syndrome.
