1. RBI retains repo rate at 6.5%: On June 7, the Reserve Bank of India (RBI) did not change the interest rates for the 8th consecutive time. RBI Governor Shaktikanta Das said that the interest rates have been kept unchanged at 6.5%. That means loans will not become expensive and EMIs will also not increase.
- RBI had earlier not increased interest rates in the meeting held in April.
- The RBI had last raised rates in February 2023 by 0.25% to 6.5%.
- The decision was taken in the meeting of the Monetary Policy Committee (MPC) of RBI.
- The RBI MPC has six members, comprising both external and RBI officials.
- Along with Governor Das, RBI officials Rajiv Ranjan, serving as executive director, and Michael Debabrata Patra, as deputy governor.
- Shashank Bhide, Ashima Goyal and Jayant R Verma are external members.
2. India ranks third with 82 Ramsar sites: On June 4, India has come at number three in the list of most Ramsar sites. Nagi and Nakati Bird Sanctuary of Bihar were included in the Ramsar site, which has increased the number of wetlands in the country to 82.
The total area of Nagi and Nakati Bird Sanctuary is 544.37 hectares.
- India has come jointly at third place with China.
- The United Kingdom (UK) has the highest number of Ramsar sites wetlands in the world.
- Mexico ranks second with 144 wetlands.
- The total area of Ramsar sites in the country increased to 13.32 lakh hectares.
- Ramsar sites include such wetlands where the land is moist and water accumulates there during the rainy season.
- UNESCO started the ‘Ramsar Convention’ in 1971.
- It is named after the city of Ramsar in Iran, where the first convention was held.
- When included in the Ramsar site, that place gets international status.

3. Sunil Chhetri retires from football: On June 6, Indian captain Sunil Chhetri retired from football. 39-year-old Sunil played the last international match of his career against Kuwait, which ended in a goalless draw.
- Sunil Chhetri is India’s top goal scorer in international football.
- He has scored 94 goals in his 19-year career.
- He is third in the list of highest goal scorer among active footballers in the world.
- He is the second highest active international goal scorer after Cristiano Ronaldo and Lionel Messi.
- Sunil has been the GOAT of Indian football, i.e. Greatest of All Time, with a dozen trophies in 150 matches.
- He was awarded the Khel Ratna Award in 2021.
- He received the Padma Shri in 2019 and the Arjuna Award in 2011.
- Sunil Chhetri was born on 3 August 1984 in Secunderabad.
4. Sarabjot Singh won gold in shooting: On June 6, India got its first gold in the International Shooting Sport Federation (ISSF) World Cup being held in Munich, Germany. Sarabjot Singh has won the gold medal in 10 meter air pistol.
22-year-old Sarabjot scored 242.7 in the eight-player final.
- China’s Bu Shuai Heng finished second with a score of 242.5.
- Robin Walter of Germany won the bronze medal.
- Sarabjot Singh won bronze in the 10m air pistol event of the Asian Shooting Championship 2023.
- He started participating in shooting competitions from 2017.

5. World’s longest pedestrian suspension bridge opens: On June 6, the world’s longest two-way suspension bridge for pedestrians was opened to the public in Stóterli Jozuli, Hungary. The length of this bridge is about 800 meters and the width is 1.2 meters.
The name of this bridge is ‘Bridge of National Unity’.
- This bridge is built between War Hill and Szar Hill.
- This bridge was built at a height of 80 meters from the ground.
- This bridge is tied with the help of 6 cables.
- The bridge is part of the Zemplén Adventure Park.
- Rs 99 crore has been spent in building this bridge.
6. Pakistan became temporary member of UNSC: On June 6, voting was held to elect 5 temporary members of the United Nations Security Council (UNSC). Pakistan was elected as a temporary member. The 193-member UNSC selected 5 countries through secret ballot.
- Apart from Pakistan, Denmark, Greece, Panama and Somalia have also been selected.
- These countries have replaced Japan, Ecuador, Malta, Mozambique and Switzerland in the UNSC.
- His term will end on 31 December 2024.
- He will be a temporary member of the world’s largest security council for two years (from January 1, 2025 to 2026).
- Somalia got 179 votes and Pakistan got 182 votes for the two seats for African and Asia-Pacific countries.
- Panama received 183 votes for Latin American and Caribbean countries.
- For Western European and other countries, Denmark got 184 votes and Greece got 182 votes.
- There are a total of 15 member countries in the UNSC, of which 5 are permanent and 10 are temporary.
- Permanent members include the United States, Britain, France, Russia and China.
- 10 temporary countries are included in the Security Council for 2 years.
7. Bird flu virus found in humans for the first time: On June 5, the World Health Organization (WHO) confirmed the first human death since the outbreak of bird flu cases. A man in Mexico died from the H5N2 virus, which has never been found in humans before.
- The 59-year-old man died at a hospital in Mexico City.
- He complained of fever, difficulty in breathing and diarrhea.
- He was suffering from chronic kidney failure, diabetes and high blood pressure.
- H5N2 is a type of avian influenza virus found in birds and poultry.
- This virus spreads through direct contact with infected birds or contaminated environment.
