The heat and humidity in Varanasi wreaked havoc on Sunday. Within the last 24 hours, 18 people died due to heat. Patients who fainted and could not reach the hospital, many died during treatment.

There is a queue of patients in all hospitals including district hospital, divisional hospital and BHU. Wards are full in government and private hospitals. In 24 hours, the maximum number of deaths (10) occurred in divisional hospital Kabirchaura, out of which four were unclaimed bodies which could not be identified yet. Four passengers died in Deendayal Hospital, two in Ramnagar, one at Chowkaghat and one at Banaras railway station.

Four people have also been reported dead in different private hospitals. The age of the deceased ranges from 35 to 75 years, however the exact cause of their death will be known only after the postmortem. The family members had admitted all of them to the hospital due to heat, humidity, unconsciousness and vomiting.

The wards in Kabirchaura Divisional Hospital are full of patients, most of the patients are complaining of dizziness and vomiting.

Amidst the rising temperature in Varanasi, the heat is making people sick. There are queues in hospitals from the city to the countryside in Kashi. More than 1000 patients have reached the hospital in the last 24 hours due to heat and humidity. Out of this, 155 patients reached the divisional hospital Kabirchaura only, while more than 200 patients reached the district hospital to get their prescriptions made.

The queue of patients in various departments of BHU reached 500, while more than 200 patients reached private hospitals in critical condition. According to the beds available in government hospitals, about 100 people were admitted, others were treated and sent home. The number of people admitted in private hospitals is also around 200.

Due to the heat and humidity, some admitted patients also had to be given oxygen.

Dr. Jayesh Mishra told that more patients have come to the emergency with vomiting, diarrhoea, fever and restlessness, the condition of some is not good. From Sunday morning to Monday morning 155 people reached the divisional hospital troubled by the heat, of which 41 were admitted. 27 people were admitted to Deen Dayal Upadhyaya District Hospital. Apart from this, about 500 patients reached BHU and other hospitals and health centres with problems of vomiting, diarrhoea as well as restlessness, headache, dizziness and fever. More than 50 people were admitted to BHU.

Some patients died at the gate and some in the ward

According to Divisional Hospital’s SIC Dr. SP Singh, out of the 9 people who died in the emergency on Sunday, four were unclaimed while five died as soon as they reached the hospital gate. They were declared dead in the emergency. On the other hand, the four people who died in the district hospital included Dhannu (45) of Chaubepur, Shivmurat Yadav (75) of Sarnath and Sarvjeet (75) of Ghazipur along with an unknown patient. On the other hand, a passenger suddenly died on Sunday evening at Cantt Railway Station. His body was lying on platform number two for a long time. A passenger Pragati lodged a complaint on X and RPF and GRP took the body into custody. She told in her complaint that the person was struggling for an hour. He was trying to breathe. But, even a doctor was not called. If someone had come on time, perhaps his life could have been saved. GRP in-charge inspector Hemant Singh said that the passenger was taken to the hospital, where doctors declared him dead. Efforts are being made to identify him. No such object or paper was found that could help in his identification. The body has been kept in the mortuary. This person was found dead on UP College Road behind Gilt Bazar Police Outpost of Shivpur Police Station. Local people told that around 6:00 in the evening this person was going on a bicycle and sat down after drinking water from a tap. Then, he lay down. Now when someone noticed, it was known that he had died. There is no injury on the body. Efforts were made to identify him, but no success was achieved. No mobile phone or papers have been recovered from him. A bicycle has been found. He has been sent to Deendayal Hospital, where he was declared dead by the doctor.
