In March, 1,345 postmortems were done on dead bodies, while in June, 2,136 postmortems were done. It is suspected that so many deaths occurred due to heat (brain stroke and heart attack).

The temperature in Varanasi remained between 43 and 46 degrees Celsius from mid-May to mid-June. In such a situation, the series of deaths also continued. There was a queue of dead bodies from the mortuary of government hospitals to the postmortem house. Everywhere, more dead bodies arrived than the capacity.
In such Daily newspaper The departmental hospital, district hospital and postmortem house were investigated. If we talk about the figures of Varanasi’s postmortem house, then from June 1 to June 17, 183 bodies were postmortemed here, out of which 48 bodies were unclaimed. Due to the heat, the process of bodies coming in is continuing. Here people are standing in queue to get the bodies. On May 30, more than 400 dead bodies reached Manikarnika Ghat in Kashi, which was three times more than on normal days. The streets here were jammed all night. The arrangements collapsed due to the crowd.
This photo is of Manikarnika Ghat. Relatives with the bodies lying on and around the ghat.
We spoke to Dom Raja Om Chaudhary, who conducts last rites at the ghat. He said – The number of dead bodies has suddenly increased after the heat increased. Not only Manikarnika, but the number of dead bodies has increased at other crematoriums including Harishchandra Ghat. Earlier 50 to 60 dead bodies used to come to Harishchandra Ghat. This figure has increased to between 150 to 200.
Waiting for last rites in Prayagraj
There is a narrow road leading to Rasulabad crematorium in Prayagraj. On June 18, there was a jam of about 1 km here. Some people put the bier on the road. We were told that there is no space inside the crematorium. So we are waiting by keeping the bier on the road. Here people were talking – 20 dead bodies would come on normal days. Now so many dead bodies are coming in 2-3 hours, how will it work?
Number coming after 5 hours
In this crowd, some people were seen hurrying towards the crematorium carrying the bier. It was told that they had been waiting for a long time. Their number was called, now they were called inside. These people had been waiting outside for 4-5 hours.
There was no serious illness
Why are people dying suddenly? We talked about this to the people present at the crematorium. The answer we got was- the people who died did not have any serious illness. They could not bear the heat wave. Their problems increased in the heat.
Harikesh Singh says- The person whose funeral I have come to attend was around 70 years old. He fell on the ground outside his house on the afternoon of 17th June. His family members were not there, he remained lying on the ground for 2 hours. It was very hot, later he died. He did not have any serious illness.
493 postmortems in 17 days in Kanpur; 142 unclaimed bodies found around the station
Bhaskar investigated from Central Railway Station to Ghantaghar Square. Talked to people living on the footpath at different spots. It came to light that about 200 people are no longer seen in this area, it was told that most of them have died. Some cited illness as the reason, while others cited heat.
To examine this reality more closely, we went to the postmortem house. According to the documents, 493 people underwent postmortems between 1st and 17th June. Among these, 142 bodies of men and women were unclaimed. Most of the bodies were found on the footpath. As the bodies were not claimed, social organizations cremated them at Bhairav Ghat crematorium.
Those who cremate unclaimed bodies said – only the poor are dying
After understanding the conditions of the station campus, we reached Bhairav Ghat crematorium. We met Dhaniram Panther, who cremates abandoned bodies. He told us that the effect of heat is more this time. We cremate abandoned bodies. This time, we are getting a lot of abandoned bodies.
I get 10-12 dead bodies every day. Some days I get 15-20 dead bodies. He said- Police contacts us for cremation of dead bodies. Some people call us when they find unclaimed dead bodies on the footpath.
