The target for wheat procurement was the lowest in Kanpur.

Wheat procurement at government centres has ended. After three and a half months of hard work, the government machinery could achieve only 7.25 percent of the wheat procurement target. 4134 metric tonnes of wheat was procured from 874 farmers through 69 centres in the district. This time, farmers have not yet purchased wheat.

PCF was in the worst condition
The worst situation in wheat procurement was of Uttar Pradesh Pradeshik Cooperative Federation (PCF). Only 2.89% i.e. 708 metric tons of wheat was procured at 29 centers of PCF. Last year, 398 metric tons of wheat was procured against the target of 57000 metric tons.

Only 7.25 per cent of the wheat procurement could be completed as compared to the target.

Purchase started at 69 centers
Wheat procurement was started at 69 centres in the district on March 1. Five agencies (Food Department, Food Corporation of India, PCF, PCU, UPSS) were given the responsibility of wheat procurement. The government had given the district a target of procuring 57,000 metric tonnes of wheat.

After May 15, farmers stopped coming
After May 15, farmers stopped coming to the centers. Government machinery bought wheat from the farmers’ homes through mobile centers. Despite all efforts, the government machinery could barely buy 4134 metric tons of wheat. However, this time more purchases were made than last year. In this, the Food Department alone bought 2336 metric tons of wheat through 18 centers.

Agencies completed formalities in the name of wheat purchase
The rest of the agencies just completed their formalities in the name of wheat procurement. Food Corporation of India bought 345 MT wheat at five centres, PCF bought 708 MT wheat at 29 centres, PCU bought 663 MT wheat at 12 centres, UPSF bought 80 MT wheat at 5 centres.

According to District Food and Marketing Officer Sanjeev Rai, wheat has been procured on the instructions of the government. 4134 metric tonnes of wheat could be procured from 874 farmers. Despite continuous efforts, farmers did not reach the centres to sell wheat.
