Team India will have to win all three matches in the Super-8 to strengthen its position in the T20 World Cup. The team will face Bangladesh from 8 pm tonight, it has already defeated Afghanistan in the first match. India’s third and last match will be against Australia.
Team India will have to win all three matches in the Super-8 because India’s semi-final will be held in Guyana on June 27. There is a high possibility of rain there, there is no reserve day for the match. That is, if the semi-final is cancelled, then only the team that wins all the matches in the group and is on top of the points table will reach the final. Let’s know India’s path to the semi-final and all the equations…
India defeated Afghanistan, will face Bangladesh today
India defeated Afghanistan by 47 runs on the difficult pitch of Barbados. With a big win, Team India has brought its run rate to 2.35, but the team is at the second position in the points table of Group-1. Because Australia defeated Bangladesh by 28 runs under the DLS method in its first match. The margin of victory of the team was less than India, but the run rate improved due to the DLS method. Australia is at the first position in the table with a run rate of 2.47.
India’s second match will be played against Bangladesh in Antigua today at 8 pm. India has played 13 T-20 matches against Bangladesh, won 12 and lost just one. This means that India can win its second consecutive match in the Super-8 today. With this win, the team will reach the top of the points table. However, the Kangaroo team will play its second match tomorrow at 6 am, and by winning it by a big margin, it can again come on top.
India can reach the semi-finals by winning 2 matches
India can make it to the semi-finals even after winning 2 matches in the Super-8. Because in this condition Bangladesh will lose 2 matches and if Australia also wins its second match tomorrow then Afghanistan will also lose its second match. This means that the teams of Bangladesh and Afghanistan will be out of the race for the semi-finals because even after winning both the last matches they will not be able to reach 4 points. Whereas India and Australia will have 4-4 points each.
The last match is against Australia, it is very important to win it
In Group-1 of Super-8, India and Australia will clash against each other in St. Lucia on 24 June. Looking at the current conditions, both the teams will play this match after winning 2-2 matches. That is, whichever team wins in St. Lucia, it will finish first in Group-1. Whereas, the losing team will finish second and make it to the semi-finals.
Top 2-2 teams from both the groups will play semi-finals
In Super-8, eight teams have been divided into two groups of 4 each. Group-1 has India, Australia, Afghanistan and Bangladesh. Group-2 has England, South Africa, West Indies and USA. The teams in the top-2 positions in the points table of both the groups will play the semi-finals.
In one semi-final, the top team of Group 1 will face the second-ranked team of Group 2. Similarly, in the other semi-final, the first-ranked team of Group 2 will face the second-ranked team of Group 1.
Why is it important to reach the semi-finals by being at number one?
It is important to be on top of the group first of all so that we can compete with the weaker team of the other group, that is, the team that is placed second. And the second reason is the ICC rule. ICC had decided before the tournament that if the semi-final gets cancelled due to rain, then the team that is placed first in the Super-8 points table will be declared the winner.
India’s semi-final will be in Guyana, heavy rain is expected here
ICC had already decided before the tournament that if India reaches the semi-finals, the match will be held in Guyana. This match will start on 27th June at 8 pm as per Indian time. No reserve day has been kept for this, because according to West Indies time, the match will start at 10:30 am.
If it rains during India’s semi-final, then 250 minutes i.e. 4 hours, 10 minutes of extra time will be given. In this, if even 10-10 overs of play is not possible between the two teams, then the match will be cancelled. In this condition, the top team of the Super-8 group will play the final.
There is a 70% chance of rain in Guyana on June 27, which means if India has to strengthen its position in the semi-finals, then the team will have to win all three matches in Group-1 and finish at the top of the points table. If Team India loses to Australia or Bangladesh and finishes second, then the team will remain at second place. In this situation, if the semi-finals are cancelled, India will not even be able to reach the final.
Is there no reserve day in the second semi-final as well?
Another semi-final of the T20 World Cup will be played in Trinidad on June 27 from 6 am. This match will start at 8:30 pm on June 26 according to West Indies time. There is a 70% chance of rain on this day too, however, if the match does not take place on June 26, then 60 minutes of extra time will be given.
If the match still cannot be held, then 27th June has been kept as a reserve day. On this day, 190 minutes i.e. 3 hours, 10 minutes of extra time will be given. There is a 60% chance of rain on 27th June as well. If even 10-10 overs of play is not possible in 190 minutes, then it will also be considered cancelled. Here also, only the team that is at the top of the points table of the Super-8 group will get the ticket to the final.
So, the overall point is that if the teams do not finish on top in the Super-8 stage, then they may have to face the loss of losing the semi-finals. If the semi-finals are cancelled, then only the group toppers will play the final. The final match will start on 29 June in Barbados at 8 pm Indian time. 30 June is the reserve day for this. There are less chances of rain in the city during this period.
