South Africa now join England from Group 2 in the final 4. Ironically, England, who lost to Australia and South Africa and had a washout game vs Scotland, were the first team to make the semis after a 10-wicket drubbing of the USA; while South Africa remain unbeaten in the competition.
South Africa made it to the T20 World Cup 2024 Semi-final from Group 2 with a nervy win over co-hosts West Indies to join England from Group 2 of Super 8, both teams will now await the top two teams from Group 1 to complete the semi-final fixtures.
South Africa, unbeaten in the tournament so far, coming into their final Super 8 fixture were in a strange predicament of being in a must-win encounter to book their spot in the final 4, while England, who lost to Australia and South Africa and had a washout game against Scotland, became the first team to make the final 4 on the back of 10-wicket drubbing of the USA in their final Super 8 fixture.
South Africa started off well restricting WI to just 135/8 on a tricky wicket riding on Tabraiz Shamsi’s 3//27 and a complete bowling performance. But, in the chase, their old nemesis, rain, appeared with the chase curtailed to 17 overs and a revised target of 123. SA lost Quinton de Kock and Reeza Hendricks in quick time but Tristian Stubbs and Heinrich Klassen stabilized the chase. However, there was more drama in store as South Africa nearly choked at the crucial juncture.
The introduction of Roston Chase changed the momentum of the game as the spinner got the wickets of David Miller and Stubbs to leave SA reeling but Marco Jansen held his nerve and finished off the game to bring joy to the SA camp, while it was despair for WI.
Co-hosts West Indies and USA have now been knocked out of the competition, while all four teams from Group 1 Super 8 are still vying for the remaining two spots in the final.
How Deos the T20 World Cup 2024 Semi-final line-up look like?
As per the current standings, England have topped Group 2 and they should play the final semi-final, meaning they will avoid India (if they make it) and play Australia or Afghanistan, depending on who makes it to the semis. South Africa, on the other hand, may run into India (if they make it) in the semi-final.
The first semifinal in Trinidad on June 26 is a night affair (6:00 AM IST) while the second semi-final in Guyana is a day game (8:30 PM IST), more suited for the Indian TV audience. India, irrespective of where they finish in their Super 8 group, will play the second semi-final.
“The Final on 29 June will have a reserve day on 30 June. The semi-finals will each have additional time added in order to complete the match which will total 250 minutes. “For the first semi-final on 26 June, 60 minutes will be available at the end of the day’s play with the remaining 190 minutes scheduled for 2pm on 27 June.
“If India qualifies for the semi-finals, they will play in the second semi-final scheduled for Guyana on the 27 June 2024,” stated the playing conditions.
