APPOINTMENTS
1. IAS Manoj Kumar Singh new Chief Secretary in Uttar Pradesh Government: A new Chief Secretary has been appointed in the Uttar Pradesh government. IAS Manoj Kumar Singh has been given the charge of Chief Secretary of Uttar Pradesh on Sunday, June 30. He will also hold the post of Infrastructure and Industrial Development Commissioner (IIDC) and CEO UPDA.
Manoj Kumar took charge at the office of Agriculture Production Commissioner on Sunday.
- Manoj Kumar is a 1988 batch IAS officer.
- Before him, Durga Shankar Mishra was serving as Chief Secretary.
- Manoj Kumar Singh is originally from Ranchi, Jharkhand.
- He was born on July 25, 1965.
- He will retire in July 2025.
- Till now he had the responsibility of many important departments like IIDC, Agriculture Production Commissioner, Additional Chief Secretary Panchayati Raj, CEO UPDA.
- He first became the Joint Magistrate of Mainpuri in 1990. After this, he kept getting important responsibilities.
- He has also been DM in Lalitpur, Gautam Buddha Nagar, Pilibhit, Moradabad and Aligarh.
- Uttar Pradesh is a state of the Republic of India, located in northern India.
- Uttar Pradesh got a special identity during the British rule and it emerged as the United Provinces of Agra and Oudh on April 1, 1937.
- In the year 1950, it got its new name Uttar Pradesh.
- Uttar Pradesh has 403 Assembly constituencies and the highest number of Lok Sabha constituencies in India, 80.
- According to the 2011 census, Uttar Pradesh, which has a population of around 20 crore, has a population density of 829 per square kilometer and sex ratio of 912.
2. Nikunja Bihari Dhal appointed Additional Chief Secretary to the Chief Minister of Odisha: IAS officer Nikunja Bihari Dhal has been appointed as the Additional Chief Secretary to the Chief Minister of Odisha. Dhal is currently serving as the Chief Electoral Officer of Odisha.
On June 30, the General Administration and Public Grievances Department of Odisha issued an order in this regard.
- Nikunja Bihari Dhal, Chief Electoral Officer of Odisha and Additional Chief Secretary, Home (Elections) Department, has been appointed as Additional Chief Secretary to the Chief Minister of Odisha, the order said.
- Dhal will replace IAS officer Surendra Kumar.
- Earlier in the day, Manoj Ahuja took over as Odisha Chief Secretary, replacing Pradeep Kumar Jena.
- Odisha is known as the land of Lord Jagannath.
- It is the tenth largest state in India in terms of area and is located in the northeastern Indian peninsula.
- The capital of Odisha was Cuttack until 1949 and a few years later Bhubaneswar was made the capital of the state.
- In 2011, the name of the state was officially changed from Orissa to Odisha.
- Formerly known as Kalinga, the state has a 485-km coastline along the Bay of Bengal.
- The official language here is Odia.
- The state was formed on 1 April 1936, comprising Odia-speaking districts of Bihar and Orissa Province.
- Every year this day is celebrated as Utkal Day.
3. Ravi Agarwal becomes the new Chairman of CBDT: On June 30, the Central Government appointed 1988 batch IRS officer Ravi Agarwal as the new Chairman of the Central Board of Direct Taxes (CBDT). He will replace Nitin Gupta, whose term ended on June 30.
Ravi Agarwal is presently working as Member (Management) on the Board.
- Ravi was to retire in September this year, but now he will remain in his post till June 30 next year.
- CBDT is the apex policy maker of the Income Tax Department.
- CBDT can have six members besides a chairman.
- The other serving members on the board are Pragya Sahay Saxena, HBS Gill, Praveen Kumar Sanjay Kumar and Sanjay Kumar Verma.
- Nitin Gupta was appointed as the Chairman of CBDT in June 2022.
- Nitin was to retire in September last year but was given a nine-month extension till June.
- Ravi Agarwal will head the CBDT till June 2025, an order issued by the Appointments Committee of the Cabinet (ACC) said.
- The full name of CBDT is Central Board of Direct Taxes.
- It is a government agency responsible for enforcing direct tax laws in India.
- CBDT was established in 1963.
- It has been responsible for many important reforms in the Indian taxation system.
4. Challa Srinivasulu Setty will become the new chairman of SBI: The Financial Services Institution Bureau (FSIB) has recommended Challa Srinivasulu Shetty as the next chairman of the State Bank of India (SBI). The FSIB, which comes under the central government, said on Saturday, June 29, that keeping in view the existing parameters and experience, the bureau recommends Challa Srinivasulu Shetty for the chairman of SBI.
Shetty has over 36 years of experience in SBI.
- He currently oversees the International Banking, Global Markets and Technology departments.
- The bank’s current chairman Dinesh Khara is retiring on August 28 after turning 63.
- 63 years is the upper age limit for SBI Chairman post.
- The FSIB has the responsibility for appointing senior executives in public sector financial institutions.
- Following the recommendation of the FSIB, the Appointments Committee of the Cabinet headed by the Prime Minister takes the final decision.
- The chairman of FSIB is Bhanu Pratap Sharma, former secretary, Department of Personnel and Training.
- State Bank of India is the largest government bank in the country.
- The government has 56.92% stake in SBI.
- SBI was established on 1 July 1955 and is headquartered in Mumbai.
- With a quarter of the market share, it has more than 22,405 branches and over 48 crore customers.
- The bank operates in 29 countries across the world and has 235 branches outside India.

5. 3 new criminal laws were implemented: 3 new criminal laws have come into force from July 1. On December 21, 2023, the Parliament of India passed three new criminal laws to replace the existing criminal laws. It was approved by President Draupadi Murmu on December 25. Now these laws have been implemented across the country from July 1, 2024.
The Indian Penal Code (IPC) enacted in 1860 has now been replaced by the Indian Judicial Code (BNS) 2023.
- In the BNS Act, 22 provisions of the IPC have been repealed and 175 have been amended.
- Along with this, 8 new sections have been added to the law.
- There are a total of 356 sections in the Indian Judicial Code, 2023.
- At the same time, the Indian Civil Defense Code 2023 has now been implemented in place of CrPC made in 1898.
- Through the Indian Civil Defence Code, 9 provisions of CrPC have been repealed, 160 provisions have been amended and 9 new provisions have been made.
- The Indian Civil Defence Code now has a total of 533 sections.
- Apart from this, the Indian Evidence Code 2023 has now been implemented in place of the Indian Evidence Code made in 1872.
- Indian Evidence Act 2023 5 provisions of the existing Indian Evidence Code have been repealed. A new provision has also been included along with changes in 23 provisions.
- Now there are a total of 170 sections in the law.

7. India participated in the UN meeting on Afghanistan: A meeting of the United Nations (UN) was held on Afghanistan on Sunday, June 30 in Doha, the capital of Qatar. 25 countries including India participated in it. This is the first time that Taliban leaders were present during the discussion on Afghanistan.

- Before this, he had been boycotting every UN meeting in which Afghanistan was discussed.
- However, the UN had made it clear that the purpose of this meeting was not to recognize the Taliban.
- Despite this, many human rights organizations criticized the meeting and raised questions.
- These organizations demand that as long as the Taliban continues to violate the rights of women, they should neither be talked to nor recognized.
- Foreign Ministry official JP Singh attended the UN meeting on Afghanistan on behalf of India. However, Foreign Minister S Jaishankar was also in Doha at this time but he did not attend the meeting.
- JP Singh had visited Kabul in March before the UN meeting and met Taliban officials there.
- India is not yet ready to recognize Afghanistan. However, it is maintaining its influence by providing humanitarian aid there.
- The Taliban is a Deobandi Islamic fundamentalist jihadist political movement in Afghanistan.
- It also refers to itself as the Islamic Emirate of Afghanistan. Following the United States invasion, it ruled about three-quarters of the country from 1996-2001.
- The Taliban recaptured Kabul on 15 August 2021 after years of insurgency and currently controls the entire country.

History of July 1: State Bank of India was established on this day in 1955. Imperial Bank was acquired by the Government of India under a Parliamentary Act. After this, the Subsidiary Act came in 1955 and different subsidiaries of State Bank were opened in the country. Under this, associate banks like State Bank of Hyderabad, State Bank of Bikaner, State Bank of Indore, State Bank of Jaipur, State Bank of Saurashtra, State Bank of Mysore, State Bank of Patiala and State Bank of Travancore were formed. However, on April 1, 2017, all these banks were merged into State Bank of India. Today State Bank is the largest bank in India and occupies one-fourth of the country’s market.
- On this day in 2017, Goods and Services Tax (GST) was implemented in the country. Under this, different tax systems of the country were abolished and ‘one country-one tax’ was introduced.
- On this day in 1991, the Warsaw Pact was dissolved after the collapse of the Soviet Union.
- On this day in 1968, 58 countries of the world including America, Soviet Union and Britain signed the Nuclear Non-Proliferation Treaty.
- Indian American astronaut Kalpana Chawla was born on this day in 1961. She died in an accident during a space mission in 2003.
- On this day in 1933, Paramvir Chakra winner Indian soldier Abdul Hamid was born.
