There has been a big upset on the second day of Wimbledon. Defending champion Marketa Vondrousova has been eliminated in the first round of Wimbledon. With this, she has become the first female defending champion to lose in the first round of Wimbledon in the last 30 years.
30 years ago in 1994, Steffi Graf was similarly knocked out in the opening round of Wimbledon by Lori McNeil.
Marketa Vondrousova, 25, of the Czech Republic lost in straight sets to Jessica Buzas Maneiro, 21, of Spain, ranked 83rd in the world. Marketa Vondrousova lost to Maneiro 6-4, 6-2 in 67 minutes. Prior to her 2023 success, Marketa Vondrousova had won only one main-draw match at SW19 and suffered an injury in Berlin two weeks ago.
World number six Vondrousova insisted before the tournament that she was fully fit, but she hit three double-faults in her first service game and then lost her cool.

The most important thing in my life and career: Jessica
Jessica said after the match, I am very happy. I think this is one of the most important moments of my life and career. I was just thinking about enjoying that moment while playing against a great women’s singles player. She won the title here last year. I was thinking that there is no pressure on me and I want to enjoy. After the first game, the atmosphere here felt very good and it felt like I was playing at home.
Novak Djokovic reaches second round
24-time Grand Slam champion Novak Djokovic of Serbia displayed his master class on the grass court and entered the second round of the year’s third Grand Slam Wimbledon by defeating Czech Republic’s Vit Kopriva 6-3, 6-2, 6-2 in consecutive sets.
