Rohit Sharma’s Team India on Thursday received prize money worth Rs 125 crore from the BCCI for winning the T20 World Cup 2024 in the Caribbean. Rohit Sharma & Co defeated first-time finalists South Africa by 7 runs in a thrilling encounter to be crowned as the world champions.
On Thursday, the team, after remaining stranded in hurricane-hit Barbados, returned to Mumbai via New Delhi and performed a victory parade in the city of dreams. Later, they gathered at the Wankhede Stadium for a felicitation ceremony where Rohit and his boys were handed the prize money.
In an interaction with reporters in Barbados after the World Cup victory, BCCI secretary Jay Shah revealed it was a collective decision of the office bearers to reward the side for ending the long wait for the title.
“We last won the title in 2007 and won it after nearly 17 years. The decision on the prize money was collectively taken by the BCCI office bearers. We were the No.1 ranked side across formats two months ago. Cricket is treated like a religion in our country and our boys won the tournament which was played by twenty teams, so we need to do something for them,” said Shah.
He further clarified that the prize money will be shared between the entire Indian contingent – from players to the selectors.
“As far as Rs 125 crore is concerned, it will cover the players, support staff, coaches and selectors as well. Everyone,” he added.
Earlier on Thursday morning, Prime Minister Narendra Modi hosted the T20 World Cup-winning Indian cricket team for breakfast on Thursday during which, he said, there were “memorable” conversations on the side’s experiences through the marquee event co-hosted by USA and the West Indies. The PM was flanked by Rohit and outgoing head coach Rahul Dravid in the group picture.
