Kalki 2898 AD director Nag Ashwin is on cloud nine with his film’s blockbuster success at the box office. The film starring Prabhas, Amitabh Bachchan, Deepika Padukone and Kamal Haasan, has grossed over Rs 700 crore globally within a week of its release. Now in an interview, Nag Ashwin has opened up about the film’s sequel.
Speaking to Times Now/Zoom, Ashwin reveals that he has already shot about 20 percent for the second part of Kalki 2898 AD. “The next one is a while off because it’s not really shot yet. It’s shot for about 20 to 30 days,” the filmmaker said, before adding, “I’d say at best 20 percent (is ready). At best 20 percent because the big stuff is still remaining. We have to get that right.”
Ashwin also hints that while Haasan has a limited role in Kalki 2898 AD, the sequel is going to be an out-and-out the Tamil superstar’s show. Haasan plays the role of Supreme Yaskin, a despotic ruler overseeing the resource-rich Complex. “It’s fully him being the antagonist,” Ashwin added.
Kalki 2898 AD became the talk of the town since its release. The film heavily draws inspiration from Mahabharata. It is set in a dystopian future and revolves around four people — a pregnant woman named SUM-80 (Deepika Padukone), who is said to be carrying a child that is the 10th avatar of Vishnu; the immortal Ashwatthama (played by Amitabh Bachchan) who has been tasked to protect the unborn child; a ruthless villain named Supreme Yaskin (Kamal Haasan), who wants the child dead for he knows the child will be the end of the baddie; and Bhairava (Prabhas), a bounty hunter who would sell anyone in return of money.
The film recorded the third biggest opening in Indian cinema with its massive Rs 191.8 crore box office collection worldwide. With this huge day 1 collection, Kalki 2898 AD has surpassed the global opening records of KGF 2 (Rs 159 crore), Salaar (Rs 158 crore), Leo (Rs 142.75 crore), Sahoo (Rs 130 crore) and Jawan (Rs 129 crore). RRR still remains the highest Indian opener with Rs 223 crore collections, followed by Baahubali 2 which grossed over Rs 217 crore on its opening day.
