Throughout his campaign, Sunak raised alarms about a Labour supermajority, asserting it could grant the opposition unchecked power

In a last-ditch effort to shape his fate, British Prime Minister Rishi Sunak on Thursday issued a fervent call to Conservative supporters, urging them to mobilise against Labour’s potential supermajority led by Keir Starmer.

This warning comes as Britons are voting in a general election widely expected to return the opposition Labour Party to power and end nearly a decade-and-a-half of Conservative rule. “The polls are open. Vote Conservative to stop the Labour supermajority which would mean higher taxes for a generation,” Sunak said in a post on X amid the high-stakes battle unfolding as voters head to the polls.

The country’s first national ballot since Boris Johnson won a landslide for the Tories in 2019 follows Prime Minister Rishi Sunak’s surprise call to hold it six months earlier than required.

Throughout his campaign, Sunak raised alarms about a Labour supermajority, asserting it could grant the opposition unchecked power. Despite dismissing suggestions of conceding defeat, Sunak and his Conservative Party focused on mitigating potential losses.

Recent polls consistently show Labour maintaining a substantial lead, prompting the Tories to target wavering supporters and criticize Starmer’s policies. During the last week of the election campaign, rhetoric intensified and accusations flew from both sides.

In response to Sunak’s claims, Labour has vehemently denied plans to increase taxes on working people, pledging no rises in income tax, national insurance, corporation tax, or VAT. Sunak’s camp has accused Starmer of intending a part-time prime ministership, citing remarks about family time, which Starmer countered as desperate and hysterical attacks.

According to UK media reports, the Conservative strategy includes warnings of economic downturns under Labour, including crash scenarios for the FTSE 100 and potential energy blackouts.
