After the end of Sri Lanka Premier League, Sanath Jayasuriya will take over as the coach of the Sri Lankan team.

Sanath Jayasuriya will be the coach of the Sri Lankan team during the T20 and ODI series against India. He himself gave this information to news agency FP.

The post of head coach of the Sri Lankan team has been vacant since Chris Silverwood left. Head coach Chris Silverwood and consultant coach Mahela Jayawardene left their posts after Sri Lanka’s poor performance in the T20 World Cup. Silverwood was the head coach of the Sri Lankan team since 2022.

Talking to the news agency on Monday, Jayasuriya said that he will replace Chris Silverwood. The Sri Lanka Cricket Board had offered him to coach the team in the home T20 and ODI series against India and then on Sri Lanka’s tour of England, which he has accepted.

Sri Lanka has to play three ODIs and three T20 series at home against Team India
Team India will tour Sri Lanka at the end of this month. The Indian team has to play a series of three T20 matches first and then a series of three ODI matches from 27 July to 7 August.

After that, Sri Lanka will tour England at the end of August to play a three-Test series. The first Test is from 21 to 25 August, while the second Test is from 29 August to 2 September and the third Test is from 6 to 9 September.

The Sri Lankan team captained by Wanindu Hasaranga was eliminated in the first round of the T20 World Cup 2024. It lost to Bangladesh and South Africa.

Sri Lanka won the T20 Asia Cup in 2022 under Silverwood’s coaching and reached the final of the 2023 ODI Asia Cup during his tenure. However, during this period, Sri Lanka has also performed disappointingly in the World Cup twice. They finished ninth in last year’s ODI World Cup and hence failed to qualify for the 2025 Champions Trophy. At the same time, the team was eliminated in the first round of the current T20 World Cup.
