The tradition of keeping Tajia in Lucknow is about 350 years old. Zukki, an expert on Islamic issues, said that the tradition of keeping Tajia in Lucknow was started in 1675 by Unmatuzzohara Bano alias “Bahu Begum” who was the wife of Nawab Shuja-ud-Daula.
He told that “Bahu Begum” wanted to visit Karbala in Iraq, but could not go due to some reason. So she placed a Tazia and visited it. Since then this tradition has been going on here.

This year, special Tajias have been prepared in Lucknow from paper, wood, wax and silver. People keep them in their homes and also take them out in processions.

On the first day of Muharram, a procession of Shahi Zari takes place from the Big Imambara to the Small Imambara. Shahi Zari is specially prepared by a special artisan Wasim Ali of Bahraich.
Wasim Ali said that its preparation starts 3 months before Muharram. 22 feet high and 10 feet wide Shahi Zari has been prepared from 2 quintals 40 kg of wax. Its cost is approximately 2 lakh 65 thousand. This work is being done by his family since 1999.
