Gautam Gambhir becomes the head coach of Team India: will replace Dravid, tenure will be till 2027; made KKR win IPL this year

Former Indian cricketer Gautam Gambhir has been appointed the head coach of Team India. BCCI Secretary Jay Shah announced Gautam’s appointment as the head coach on Tuesday. He gave this information through X post.
42-year-old Gambhir will replace Rahul Dravid, popularly known as The Wall. Dravid’s tenure has ended after the T20 World Cup.
Gambhir made Kolkata Knight Riders the champion of IPL-2024 a month and a half ago. He became the mentor of the Kolkata franchise this year. Not only this, under his mentorship, Gambhir led the Lucknow Super Giants to the playoffs for 2 consecutive seasons.

Through this post, Jai Shah announced the appointment of Gautam Gambhir as the head coach.
Gambhir does not have coaching experience
42-year-old Gambhir has no experience of coaching at international or domestic level, he has been in charge of coaching staff in 2 IPL franchises. He was the mentor of Lucknow Super Giants in IPL 2022 and 2023, while he joined KKR in the 2024 season. Gambhir led the team to the playoffs in the first two seasons while at LSG. At the same time, he made KKR the champion this season.

Gambhir won 2 World Cups and 2 IPLs as a player
As a player, Gambhir was part of India’s T20 World Cup win in 2007 and ODI World Cup win in 2011. He captained KKR for seven IPL seasons from 2011 to 2017, and also qualified for the playoffs five times. As a captain, he won two titles in 2012 and 2014.

Dravid became the head coach in November 2021
Rahul Dravid was made the head coach of India in November 2021, when Team India was eliminated from the group stage of the T20 World Cup. The team again played the semi-finals in the 2022 T20 World Cup. Dravid’s tenure ended after the ODI World Cup in 2023, but due to Team India reaching the final, his tenure was extended till the T20 World Cup. Then Dravid made India the world champion in T20. On June 29, India won the T20 World Cup by defeating South Africa by 7 runs.
Under the coaching of Dravid, Team India has also won the Asia Cup in 2023. India won the title by defeating host Sri Lanka.
