Emraan Hashmi said that Parveen’s relatives assumed his on-screen serial kisser image to be real.
Emraan Hashmi recently opened up about his wife Parveen Shahani’s family not supporting their marriage due to his ‘serial kisser’ image. The actor said that since in the earlier days, an actor’s image on screen was thought to be their actual personality, Parveen’s relatives didn’t react fondly to the idea of her marrying Emraan.
Speaking to Shubhankar Mishra’s podcast, the actor addressed his “wonderful” marriage and said, “We’ve had 18 years of wonderful, happy marriage. I value her in my life, and I would never leave her.” When asked how he had escaped any rumours about their relationship, he said, “Before social media, the lines between on-screen and off-screen images would be blurred, so people thought that I was actually like my characters. Some of them didn’t even know if I was married.”
Emraan continued, “She used to scold me a lot. But she’s also very understanding. If she wasn’t understanding, I wouldn’t have been able to do the kind of roles that I did. Her family had ‘dikkat’, but at the very beginning. I had a strong image, you see. They were like, ‘Wow, she’s going to marry Emraan Hashmi?’ They’ve never met me; I’m talking about distant relatives. But finally, when we met…”
Emraan said, “In my life, my relationship, my love for her was the priority. The profession was secondary.” Emraan added that the secret behind is happy marriage is “Listen to your wife, even when she’s wrong.”
Speaking to Bollywood Hungama earlier this year, Emraan was questioned about why he had stopped doing kissing scenes in films. He responded, “It’s the voice of my wife and I listen to that. I haven’t added any kissing scenes in my films. In fact, from the beginning, I wanted to tone it down in films but an image of mine was created and a lot of producers took advantage of that. It became a staple thing to please the audience. When I see my films, I honestly feel that in some places those scenes weren’t required but it was an awakening for an audience also. It was a lead for cinema but I received the flak.”
When asked if his wife felt insecure about his kissing scenes, the actor said, “Of course she did but not anymore because I don’t do those kinds of scenes anymore.”
On the work front, the Tiger 3 actor is awaiting the release of the second part of his Disney+ Hotstar series, Showtime, on July 12. Talking about the ‘positive feedback’ he received for the first part, Emraan told News18 Showsha, “What people reacted to was that it was a breezy, entertaining and fun take on our industry. We sprinkled a lot of truths about it in a very interesting way. I would want to give credit to the writers for that. It captured the idiosyncrasies of producers and stars in an industry where relationships are fickle, transient and fleeting and where there’s no permanence of success and failure and stocks go up and down.”
