The National Green Tribunal (NGT) on Friday banned the cutting of trees for the widening of the Ganganahar track (Kanwar Yatra route) going from Ghaziabad to Roorkee in Haridwar. NGT has taken cognizance of this on the complaint of an environmentalist. NGT has banned the cutting of trees on the Indian coast.

SP MLA Atul Pradhan had recently protested against tree felling, after which the Forest Department had initiated an investigation.

Consent was taken for 15 meters, trees were cut in 25-27 meters width
The work of widening the Ganganahar track is to be done from Muradnagar in Ghaziabad district to Purkaji in Muzaffarnagar district. 1.12 lakh trees were selected for felling in Ghaziabad, Meerut and Muzaffarnagar. Recently, the felling of trees was started. Now the opposition to this is intensifying. Recently, SP MLA Atul Pradhan from Sardhana in Meerut also protested. After which the forest department officials investigated the allegations.
The investigation revealed that permission was taken for cutting trees in a width of 20 meters. But later, an agreement was reached to cut the trees standing on the track in a width of 15 meters. When the forest department team investigated on the spot, it was found that these trees were cut in a width of 25 to 27 meters instead of 15 meters.

Climate disaster expected in West UP
Here, environmentalists Rajendra Tyagi, Vikrant Tongad and Satendra Singh complained about this matter to NGT Delhi. Advocate Ashish Vashisht told the tribunal that cutting of trees is sure to cause a climate disaster in western Uttar Pradesh. The existence of the canal is also under threat. At present, NGT has directed the Indian Survey Department to submit satellite photos of the cut trees.
