The country’s first hydrogen ship, which started from Kolkata, has reached Kashi today. The ship that came from Kochi Shipyard via sea route completed its journey by reaching Ramnagar. The ship was stopped at Namo Ghat late in the evening, from where it reached Ramnagar Multi-Modal Terminal under the supervision of the Tourism Department late at night.

The double-decker tourist ship Kata Meran left Kolkata in the last week of June. Due to low water on the way, it faced problems in reaching Banaras, due to which the ship took more time to complete half the journey.

The hydrogen ship was launched from Kochi Shipyard

The country’s first hydrogen ship has reached Varanasi, now it will be used for the development of tourism. The ship reached Kolkata via sea route from Kochi Shipyard. From there, the newly built hydrogen fuel powered double decker Kata Meran tourist ship will reach Varanasi on Monday afternoon via the river Ganga. A surveyor ship is scouting from Varanasi to bring the ship.

According to the officials of the Inland Waterways Authority of India, Cochin Shipyard will conduct the trials for six months and will also arrange for hydrogen gas on its own. After the trial is over, the Tourism Department will operate the vessel under its supervision. The fare and route will be decided.

Hydrogen plants will be set up

To ensure availability of sufficient hydrogen for the operation of IWAI vessels so that their trial in Ganga can be completed, a temporary plant is being set up at Ramnagar Multimodal Terminal. The authority has set a target of producing 1500 kg of gas per day. Talks have been held with two companies to start production.

The Inland Waterways Authority of India is trying to set up three permanent hydrogen plants after the handover process is completed. The ships will be stationed at the multimodal terminal Ralhupur. Work is underway to set up a temporary plant at the terminal itself. Hydrogen will be filled in cylinders from here and delivered to the ships and will be operated in the river.

According to Noida IWAI Chief Engineer Technical Vijay Kumar Diyalani, initially Cochin Shipyard will arrange for hydrogen gas at its own level but positive talks are going on with the companies to set up a permanent plant later.

Tourism department will run 50 seater ship

Preparations to launch electric catamaran in September

Cochin Shipyard General Manager Shivram said that Banaras, Mathura and Ayodhya will get one more electric catamaran each. Construction work has started in Kolkata. They will be sent to the designated places from the last week of September. One catamaran each has already been made available in Banaras and Ayodhya.

Operations are also being carried out in the Ganga, but many changes have been made in the second catamaran under construction. It is being technically enriched. The design will also change. Many facilities including balcony will be made available to the people. Work has been expedited in this direction.
