In response to a surge in hit-and-run incidents across Pune, Nashik, and Mumbai, the Pune Police have escalated their efforts against drunk driving. Effective from Monday, July 15, stringent measures have been implemented to curb this dangerous practice on city roads. Under the new directives, drivers caught under the influence of alcohol will face severe penalties. Initially, offenders will have their driving licenses revoked for three months. Subsequent violations will result in a six-month cancellation of their driving privileges.
Citing Section 19 of the Motor Vehicle Act, authorities emphasised the legal basis for these actions, aimed at enhancing road safety. Over the past six months alone, Pune has witnessed 1,684 cases of drunk driving, prompting swift regulatory action. The Pune Regional Transport Office (RTO) is currently reviewing a proposal to cancel licenses for all 1,684 individuals. This measure targets primarily drivers aged 25 to 40, reflecting the severity of the issue.
Moreover, in cases involving minors behind the wheel, stringent penalties apply under Section 199A. This includes legal action against parents and vehicle owners, with penalties of up to six months imprisonment and a fine of Rs 25,000. Offenders in this category face a 12-month suspension of their driving licenses, with permanent revocation for repeat offenses.
In a related development, Deputy Commissioner of Traffic Police, Rohidas Pawar, has mandated the compulsory use of helmets for all two-wheeler riders, reinforcing safety protocols across the city.
The Pune Police urge all motorists to adhere strictly to these regulations to ensure the safety of all road users.
