A Maratha family from Pune started Moharram in Banda 265 years ago. Yes, the famous Rama Imambada of Banda was established by a Hindu Brahmin Rama Rao. Rama Imambada was the first Imambada of Banda, in 1765 AD, a woman from the same family, Lakshmi and her relative Bhauram established another Imambada which is known as Bhauram Tayya’s Imambada and here the festival of Moharram is celebrated together by people of both Hindu and Muslim communities. Whether it is about raising a shield in the procession or jumping into a bonfire, both participate in this festival which is a great example in itself in today’s times.

An example of communal unity, mourning is observed in the memory of Imam Hussain for ten days during Muharram in Banda. During these days, the grandsons of Mohammed Sahib were killed, after which the Muslim community has been celebrating it as a mourning in which mourning is done by placing shields and taziyas in the Imambaras at various places in the memory of Imam Hussain.

Among these Imambaras, the most historic and oldest is the Rama Ka Imambara, which was established in 1750 by Maratha Brahmin Rama Ji who came from Pune and for the first time in Banda, he raised the shield in the memory of Imam Hussain. Since then, Rama’s descendants have been following this tradition by staying barefoot, sleeping on the ground and fasting for 10 days during Muharram. In Banda, Hindus and Muslims celebrate the festival of Muharram together, and it is not that only the descendants of Rama Ji come here, but thousands of devotees of Hussain from all over the country come to this Imambara during Muharram with their wishes and they believe that all wishes are fulfilled here.
