UPSC Chairman Manoj Soni resigned: He became the chairman last year, had 5 years of tenure left, said- this is not related to Pooja Khedkar controversy

UPSC (Union Public Service Commission) Chairman Manoj Soni has resigned citing personal reasons. He has said that after resigning, he will focus on social and religious work. He had sent his resignation to the Department of Personnel (DOPT) 14 days ago, information about this came to light today (July 20).

The resignation has not been accepted yet. His term was till May 2029. He was sworn in as the chairman of UPSC on 16 May 2023.

Rajya Sabha MP said- was removed from the post amid controversies
After the resignation was reported, Manoj Soni has said that his resignation is not in any way connected to the controversies and allegations of trainee IAS Pooja Khedkar. At the same time, Congress leader and Rajya Sabha MP Jairam Ramesh has said on the resignation of the chairman that he has been removed from the post amid controversies related to UPSC.

He said that since 2014 till now, the sanctity of the constitutional body has been badly affected.

Controversies related to IAS selection surfaced during Manoj Soni’s tenure
During Manoj Soni’s tenure, IAS trainee Pooja Khedkar and IAS Abhishek Singh were embroiled in controversies. Abhishek Singh had passed the Union Public Service Commission (UPSC) examination under the disabled category. He had declared himself as having a locomotive disorder i.e. unable to walk. Abhishek had resigned from IAS for his acting career. Read full news

Every year UPSC conducts exam for recruitment in civil services
UPSC is a constitutional body under Articles 315-323 Part XIV Chapter II of the Constitution of India. This commission conducts various examinations on behalf of the central government. It conducts civil services examinations every year for recruitment to IAS, Indian Foreign Service (IFS), Indian Police Service (IPS) and Central Services- Group A and Group B.

Apart from the chairman, there are 10 members in the governing body of the commission. Till Friday, apart from the chairman, there were seven members in the body. Former chairman of Gujarat Public Service Commission Dinesh Dasa was also among them.
