The UP government has filed its reply in the Supreme Court in the matter of ordering shopkeepers to put up nameplates on the Kanwar Yatra route. The Supreme Court will hear this reply today i.e. on Friday. The UP government said in its reply-

The government said in its reply- The purpose behind these instructions was to let the Kanwariyas know what food they are taking, so that their religious sentiments are not hurt even by mistake. The use of onion and garlic in the Kanwar Yatra has been a cause of quarrel. Therefore, the purpose of these instructions is to ensure that the Kanwar Yatra is completed peacefully. These instructions of the government do not discriminate on the basis of religion. These instructions are for everyone.
We haven’t banned anything
The government said- Police officials took this action to address the concerns of pilgrims and maintain law and order. The state has not imposed any ban or prohibition on the trade or business of food vendors (except the ban on selling non-vegetarian food). Shopkeepers are free to carry on their business as usual.
The government said that the requirement to display the name and identity of the owners is merely an additional measure to ensure transparency and to avoid any possible confusion among the Kanwariyas.
The government opposed the petition
The UP government opposed the petitions filed in this dispute. The government said- The press release was issued solely in public interest to ensure the peaceful completion of the Kanwar Yatra. More than 4.07 crore Kanwariyas participate every year.
The government said – We are committed to protecting the religious sentiments of people of any religion. Being committed to the secular values enshrined in our Constitution, the religious sentiments of every person are protected, irrespective of his religion. The state always takes steps to ensure that festivals of all religions are celebrated peacefully.
