The Olympic motto is made up of three Latin words: Citius, Altius, and Fortius. These words mean Faster, Higher, and Stronger.

If we look at the history of Olympics, only those countries are able to perform well in it which are super powers economically, strategically and in defence.

After all, what is the connection between being a super power and being an Olympic medal topper. Know in 5 points…

1. Super Power in Modern Olympics

  • The modern Olympic Games have been taking place since 1896. Since then, the world has seen countries like the US, Soviet Union, Britain, China, France, Germany, Italy and Japan as superpowers.
  • If we look at the top-10 medal tally of Olympics, we can see the dominance of these countries. After the Second World War, the two biggest super powers, America and Soviet Union, emerged; these countries are in the top-2 positions in Olympics too.
  • Before these two, Britain and France, which were super powers and representatives of colonialism, are also in the top-5. Germany and Italy, which were allies in the Second World War, are also in the top-10.

2. Big spending on sports

  • America does not give any funding to its Olympic Association, but through private means, about Rs 20 thousand crores is spent on American athletes for every Olympics.
  • Every year in Britain, 1.5 billion dollars (about 11 thousand crores rupees) is spent on sports infrastructure and training.
  • The figures of expenditure from China and Russia are not available. It is believed that China is spending Rs 18-20 thousand crores in every cycle of 4 years on preparing players for the Olympics.

3. Sports Infrastructure
Almost every major city in countries like America and China has excellent sports infrastructure. These include international quality stadiums, equipment, high performance centers, biomechanics centers, etc.

4. World class training and coaching

  • In super power nations, players are trained by understanding the science of every sport. Sports universities and sports research centers have been established for this.
  • In America, players are selected at school level and college level and they are given every training and facility related to the game.
  • In China and Russia, children are prepared for sports at a very young age. They are given rigorous training. This includes physical as well as mental training.

5. The superpower’s motive behind becoming an Olympic medal topper

  • Proving yourself powerful without fighting a battle: Super power means the strongest, the tallest and the fastest. Olympics provide a platform to prove these three things through sports. A super power can prove itself powerful without fighting a war.
  • Describing economy, system, technology as better: Super powers can tell the world that their system, economy and technology are better by achieving top positions in the Olympics. America and the Soviet Union did this. Now China is on the same path.
  • Increasing public confidence by winning medals: There is no war in the Olympics. But here athletes from super power nations face players from all over the world. Winning medals assures the public that the government and the system are good. Confidence increases.
