Lord Dakshinamurthy is an incarnation of Lord Shiva, revered as the Gnanaguru, or teacher of wisdom. Unlike other gurus who impart knowledge through words, Dakshinamurthy teaches in silence, resolving the doubts of his disciples without speaking. The Dakshinamurthy Temple in Eluru, located in the West Godavari district of Andhra Pradesh, is a significant spiritual destination dedicated to Lord Dakshinamurthy. The temple holds cultural and spiritual importance for devotees, especially those seeking guidance in education, philosophy, and wisdom. The serene environment of the temple allows devotees to engage in contemplation and spiritual practices. According to legend, when Lord Brahma began creation, he first brought forth Sanaka, Sanandana, Sanatsujata, and Sanatkumara. Brahma requested their help in continuing the process of creation, but they declined, expressing their desire to seek knowledge of Brahman instead. They set off in search of a guru to enlighten them on this knowledge.

Distressed by their lack of understanding, Lord Shiva took the form of Dakshinamurthy and sat beneath a banyan tree along their path. The Puranas say that through his silent presence, Dakshinamurthy granted them the knowledge of Brahman.

Medha, as an incarnation of Dakshinamurthy, continues to impart wisdom to all. Devotees believe that visiting this temple near Koyyalagudem in West Godavari District will bless them with wisdom. While we may accumulate health, wealth, and pleasure in life, it is knowledge that allows us to manage these properly; without it, all material possessions lose their value.

Knowledge is considered as the highest gift. Harish, a yoga teacher, shared with Local 18 that Lord Dakshinamurthy is worshipped at this temple, and those who visit it can free themselves from ignorance and attain true wisdom.

Dakshinamurthy literally means “one who faces south” in Sanskrit. According to another school of thought, “Dakshinya” in Sanskrit means karuna or goodness. Thus, this manifestation of Shiva is a benevolent teacher who imparts wisdom to those seeking salvation. In most Shiva temples, the stone image of Dakshinamurthy is placed facing south on the southern circular path around the sanctum sanctorum.
