Remember Flappy Bird? The super-engaging endless tapper that once took the world by storm is now ready to return. Originally launched in 2013, the simple yet interesting mobile game became an overnight sensation, garnering nearly 100 million downloads and a humongous ad revenue. But just as swiftly as it had risen to fame, creator Dong Nguyen shockingly took the decision to shut it down, leaving users highly disappointed. With that said, Flappy Bird is expected to be back in 2025 for all iOS and Android devices following its decade-long hiatus.
The Flappy Bird Foundation, which acquired the rights to the game, dropped a 1-minute trailer, offering fans a glimpse of what they can expect. “I Am Back,” they wrote, thanking all the fans who made its return possible. “Just a decade ago, I was the talk of the town and soaring to new heights with my 100 million friends. Sadly, I had to leave the fame and spotlight behind to go home and find out who I really am. Thanks to my super Flappy Bird® fans, I’m refreshed, reinvigorated, and ready to soar again. The decade-long mission involved acquiring legal rights and even working with my predecessor to uncage me and re-hatch the official Flappy Bird® game!” the caption read.

What Was Flappy Bird Taken Down?
Creator Dong Nguyen, whose journey into game development inspired him to create his own games, launched Flappy Bird in 2013. A simple-looking game, players just had to control the funny bird by tapping on the screen. Little did he know that his creation would be a viral success story. Within months of its launch, Flappy Bird shot to the top of the chart with millions of players.
Despite the roaring popularity, Nguyen came under immense pressure after being bombarded with interviews and media attention. He was even criticised by many, who believed the game was addictive and affecting younger players.
Unable to cope with the overwhelming attention, Nguyen took the controversial decision to remove Flappy Bird in February 2014. “Flappy Bird was designed to play in a few minutes when you are relaxed. But it happened to become an addictive product. I think it has become a problem. To solve that problem, it’s best to take down Flappy Bird. It’s gone forever,” he told Forbes in the same year.
