Health department alert from monkeypox

Monkeypox has been declared a Public Health Emergency of International Concern. UP Secretary Ranjan Kumar has issued a letter to all DMs. In which instructions have been given to immediately inform about every activity of the district. This letter was issued on 3 September. After which Saharanpur DM Manish issued an advisory regarding monkeypox. However, no such case has come in UP yet.

DM Manish Bansal has issued an advisory. He said- If a person infected with monkeypox is found, a list of all the people who came in contact with him will be made. The list will be sent to the district and state level surveillance units. He said that all the districts have been alerted from the government level that all the people who have come from those countries where monkeypox cases have been reported in the last 21 days should be screened. If symptoms of monkeypox are found in anyone, then it will be tested in the microbiology lab of King George Medical University Lucknow (KGMU). Special teams have been formed for this, which will handle the work of sample collection and investigation.

Monkeypox is a viral zoonotic disease The DM said that WHO has declared monkeypox as a Public Health Emergency of International Concern. It is a viral zoonotic disease found in the tropical rain forests of Central and West Africa. It sometimes spreads from geographical areas. He said that any person coming from abroad or any person with symptoms of monkeypox should be tested immediately.

Toll free number issued DM said- All these arrangements are being made as a precaution. So that any possible danger can be dealt with. People can be protected. He said that monkeypox is a self-limited disease, whose symptoms can last for 2 to 4 weeks. The mortality rate of this disease can be between 1-10%. State level helpline number 1800 1805145 has been issued for symptoms of diseases, preventive measures and doubt resolution.

Monkeypox disease symptoms

  • Rashes on the body, fever and swollen lymph nodes.
  • Monkeypox can be transmitted to humans from animals or other infected humans. The virus can enter the body through broken skin (even if it is not exposed), respiratory tract, or mucous membranes (eyes, nose, or mouth).
  • Transmission may occur through bites or scratches from an infected animal, eating bushmeat (flesh from wild mammals, reptiles or amphibians), direct contact with body fluids or wound material, or indirect contact through soiled bedding.
  • The disease can also be spread by coming in contact with an infected person. Breathing near each other, which can be through droplets or short-range aerosols. The disease can also be spread through skin-to-skin contact, i.e. sexual intercourse, oral sex and kissing.
  • The monkeypox virus can persist for some time on clothing, bedding, towels, objects, electronics and surfaces touched by a person infected with monkeypox.
  • The incubation period for the disease is usually 6–13 days, but can range from 5–21 days. Infected individuals are usually not contagious during this period.
  • An infected person can spread the disease 1-2 days before the rash appears. They can remain contagious until the scabs fall off.
  • The monkeypox virus is less contagious than smallpox and causes less severe disease.
