Date- 2 June 1995Chief Minister Mulayam Singh Yadav came to attend a function at Taj Hotel in Lucknow. At that time his Principal Secretary gave him a slip. Mulayam Singh’s face turned pale as he read the slip. He got up from his chair and headed straight towards the Chief Minister’s residence. The slip
,
Mulayam Singh called a meeting of SP leaders and ministers. He called it a betrayal. He said that he will prove his majority in the assembly. Meanwhile, angry SP leaders and workers reached the State Guest House on Mirabai Road in Lucknow. Mayawati was staying in room number 1 here. Mayawati was treated rudely.
This is the story of the first alliance between SP and BSP breaking up 29 years ago. Even then, no major reason was revealed. Forgetting these things, both the parties came together in the 2019 Lok Sabha elections. The alliance of Akhilesh Yadav and Mayawati could not do anything special. The alliance broke after the elections. There is a political uproar over the reasons for this alliance breaking up 4 years ago. Mayawati and Akhilesh are accusing each other of not picking up the phone.
This is not the first time that allegations and counter-allegations are being made about the breakdown of the alliance. So far, 7 governments formed in UP through alliances have collapsed due to infighting. BSP was a part of 4 of these coalition governments. Mayawati herself has been the CM in 3 of them.

Big alliances were formed 7 times to form the government, no government lasted for 5 years
1- Chaudhary Charan Singh government in 1967
Chaudhary Charan Singh started coalition politics in UP. For the first time in 1967, an experiment was done to bring together parties with different ideologies. Chaudhary Charan Singh separated from Congress and formed Bharatiya Kranti Dal (Lok Dal) and formed the United Legislature Party government. Communist Party and Jan Sangh also joined the government. The government fell within a year.
Why the alliance broke: The Samyukta Vidhayak Dal government was a unique experiment in Indian politics, which included people from extreme leftists to extreme rightists. Jansangh had the maximum number of 98 MLAs. Therefore, Charan Singh gave it three important departments of education, local administration and cooperation. Later, Charan Singh took these departments from them and gave them the public works and animal husbandry departments. This angered the Jansangh.
At the same time, the Marxist Communist Party was the first to distance itself from the government on the issue of retrenchment of government employees. When the United Socialist Party started the English Hatao movement, it had serious differences with Charan Singh. The dispute escalated and the government fell.
2- Ram Naresh Yadav’s government
It was on 25th June, 1975. The then Prime Minister Indira Gandhi imposed emergency. Angered by this, the political parties formed a coalition against Congress in 1977 in the name of Janata Party. Jansangh was also a part of it. The coalition won and Ramnaresh Yadav became the CM. The government fell in just 1 year and 10 months.
Why the alliance broke: On February 14, 1979, Ram Naresh Yadav’s government had issued an order that RSS shakhas cannot be set up in public places without permission. MLAs and ministers associated with Jansangh came out in protest against this order and the government fell.
3- Mulayam Singh’s government in 1989
At that time, there was opposition to the then Prime Minister Rajiv Gandhi over the Bofors scandal. Union Minister Vishwanath Pratap Singh rebelled. All parties united against the Congress. The Janata Dal government was formed in Uttar Pradesh on 5 December 1989 under the leadership of Mulayam Singh Yadav. The BJP also supported from outside. But this government also did not last for 5 years. The conflict between the BJP and the SP increased due to the Ram Mandir movement. The BJP withdrew its support, but the government did not fall because of the Congress. The Congress came together with Mulayam Singh.
Why the alliance broke: After the kar sevaks reached close to the disputed structure, Mulayam ordered the security forces to open fire. In this action of the security forces, 16 kar sevaks died and hundreds of people were injured. After firing on the kar sevaks, Congress decided to withdraw support from the government. It was afraid that Hindu voters might turn away from it. However, even before the announcement of Congress, Mulayam Singh Yadav recommended dissolution of the assembly. After this, assembly elections were held and Mulayam Singh’s party was out of power.
Mulayam Singh has also been the Defence Minister at the Centre.
4- Mulayam’s government fell again, guest house incident happened
BJP was growing rapidly in UP riding on the Ram Mandir movement. At the same time, there was a ruckus over the implementation of Mandal Commission’s recommendations. To stop BJP, Kanshiram and Mulayam Singh formed an alliance and contested the 1993 assembly elections. Both got 176 seats. A government was formed in alliance with smaller parties. Mulayam Singh Yadav became CM for the second time, but the government could not last more than 2 years.
Why the alliance broke: Every month Mayawati and Kanshi Ram would come to Lucknow and Mulayam Singh would ask questions. At that time BSP was a growing party. Kanshi Ram was not ready to back down on Dalit issues under any circumstances. SP was a supporter of backward classes and Muslims. During this time, elections for district panchayat presidents were held. Strongmen became district panchayat presidents. Due to this, Kanshi Ram and Mayawati decided to separate from SP. Then the guest house incident happened.
5- Mayawati government after the guest house incident
After Mulayam’s government fell, BJP supported BSP. Mayawati became CM for the first time. She took oath at midnight on June 3, 1995. But, this alliance lasted only 4 months.
Why the alliance broke: BJP was the biggest party, but it supported BSP from outside. Mayawati remained vocal against BJP. She wanted to show that BSP is not under anyone’s pressure. She started making statements against BJP. BJP leaders started pressuring their leadership to withdraw support. Kalyan Singh also became vocal against Mayawati and the government fell.
Mayawati and Kalyan Singh formed the government together in 1996.
6- Mayawati and BJP came together for the second time
In the assembly elections held in 1996, no party got majority. BSP fought the elections in alliance with Congress. After the elections, BJP and BSP came to an agreement. There was agreement on Chief Minister for 6 months each. Mayawati became the Chief Minister for the second time on March 21, 1997. BJP also joined the government, but after 6 months Mayawati refused to hand over power to Kalyan Singh.
Why the alliance broke: Mayawati refused to leave power. After a lot of pressure, she asked to make someone other than Kalyan Singh the Chief Minister. However, Kalyan Singh became the CM. After a few days, Mayawati broke the alliance. BJP broke the BSP MLAs along with some of its supporting parties and formed the government under the leadership of Kalyan Singh. This government lasted till 2002.
7- Mayawati’s alliance with BJP for the third time
In the assembly elections held in 2002, a hung assembly was formed again. BJP and BSP forgot their old bitterness and formed an alliance for the third time. Mayawati became the CM, but then the old story came to the fore. This alliance lasted for a little more than a year and a half.
Why the alliance broke: The differences between BJP and BSP grew so much that on 29th August, 2003, this government also fell. In a dramatic turn of events, Mayawati recommended the then Governor to dismiss the government. BJP claimed that it had already submitted a letter withdrawing its support to the Governor before the recommendation of dismissal. The assembly was not dissolved, but BJP and BSP were out of the government. A government was formed under the leadership of Mulayam Singh by breaking the supporters of BJP and BSP.
Now know that before elections, alliances of parties are formed and if government is not formed then they are broken
1- Alliance of BSP and Congress: For the first time, BSP and Congress formed an alliance in the 1996 assembly elections.
Why the alliance broke: Both of them got less seats and could not form the government. Therefore BSP distanced itself from Congress. It formed the government in alliance with BJP.
2- First alliance of SP-Congress: In the 2014 Lok Sabha elections, SP and Congress suffered a huge defeat. At that time, Akhilesh Yadav was the Chief Minister. In the 2017 UP Assembly elections, SP and Congress formed an alliance to stop the BJP. The amazing ‘two boys’ duo’ was discussed a lot in the entire state. But, both the parties could not do anything special in the storm of BJP.
Why the alliance broke: Both the parties did not gain anything from this alliance and they parted ways.

3- Alliance of Mayawati and Akhilesh: As soon as SP and Congress parted ways, Lok Sabha elections were to be held in 2019 after two years. Now the aunt (Mayawati) – nephew (Akhilesh) duo has come. RLD was also included in this.
Why the alliance broke: In the Lok Sabha elections, BSP got 10 seats and SP got 5 seats. At that time, without saying anything, Mayawati announced the breaking of the alliance. 4 years later, Mayawati said that Akhilesh did not pick up her and her leaders’ phone, so she broke the alliance.

Now know who is most talked about in the country for changing sides…
Not only in UP, alliances have been formed and broken in other states of the country as well. The most talked about among these is Bihar CM Nitish Kumar. He has changed sides 9 times in his political career. Senior journalist Luv Kumar Mishra says- Lalu Prasad Yadav became CM for the first time in 1990 with the help of Nitish Kumar. However, later the relationship between the two soured. Nitish accused Lalu of neglect and separated from Janata Dal by organizing a big Kurmi rally in 1994.
Then he formed Samata Party. Nitish Kumar contested the 1995 elections along with the left parties, but could not succeed in his mission. After this, Nitish Kumar broke the alliance with CPI and joined NDA. In 2013, Nitish Kumar became disillusioned with NDA. He announced to contest the 2014 Lok Sabha elections alone.
Then in the 2015 assembly elections, he formed an alliance with Lalu’s party. Formed the government. Lalu Yadav’s son and Deputy CM Tejashwi Yadav was accused of corruption. Nitish Kumar gave a statement on corruption and then suddenly resigned. Then formed the government with the BJP. Nitish Kumar fought the 2020 assembly elections with the BJP and was successful. But in 2022, Nitish Kumar again became disillusioned with the NDA.
Nitish has so far formed alliance with different parties nine times.
Two years later in 2022, Nitish Kumar once again broke the alliance in his own style and said that he was having problems with the BJP. Nitish Kumar resigned from the post of CM and left the BJP and joined RJD within an hour. Nitish Kumar formed the government with RJD, Congress and Left and made Tejashwi the Deputy CM again. After one and a half years, Nitish Kumar once again became disillusioned with RJD. He resigned and formed the government by allying with the BJP.
