Ahead of Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s US visit, Gokul Kunnath, an NRI from Atlanta, recalls that from the early days of his journey, the BJP leader has been known for his simple way of living. He believes in a minimalist lifestyle. This trait was evident even during his youth, especially on his travels.

In 1997, Modi visited the US to attend some events organised by the Indian diaspora. He was serving as a BJP national general secretary then.

During this trip, Modi met Gokul Kunnath, who had gone to pick him up from the Atlanta airport. Like most people expecting a long stay, he assumed Modi would carry plenty of luggage. However, to his surprise, Modi was carrying just a small briefcase-sized bag.

Kunnath thought the rest of the luggage must still be coming from the airline. When he asked if the luggage was on the way, Modi calmly responded, “There’s no luggage. This is all I have for the trip.”

This moment left a lasting impression on Kunnath. It reflected Modi’s spartan lifestyle—one that goes beyond simplicity. It showcased his humility and the discipline of a pracharak, living without excess.

This minimalistic approach continues to define Modi’s life, even today, as the Prime Minister of India, says Kunnath.
