The temple of Maa Maheshwari Devi is situated at the place where there used to be a dense forest called Balkhand Patal. At that time, Banda was known as Chhote Bazar Kyotra and Ardli Bazar. There was also a pond in Collector Ganj area, where a potter used to go to get clay. It is said that while digging clay from this pond, a statue of the goddess was found, which was in the form of a rock. After removing the soil from around it, people started worshiping the goddess.
The important role of a Hindu artisan named Maheshwari
A Hindu artisan named Maheshwari played an important role in the history of the temple. He used to work in the mosque all day and used the leftover material from the construction work to build a shrine for the goddess idol. At that time, the Begum used to live in Begum Sahib’s Sarai in Ardali Bazar Katra, where Nawab Sahib used to come and go.
According to the storyWhen the labourers were passing through the Balkhand Patal forest, they saw Maheshwari engrossed in the construction of the temple. They told Maheshwari that “From tomorrow you build this temple first, do the work of the mosque later.” Thus, Banda Nawab laid the foundation of Hindu-Muslim unity by getting the temple constructed. However, after some time the temple built by the Maheshwari artisan collapsed in a storm.

During this time, the family of Chaudhary Pahelwan Singh rebuilt the temple. Today, a lamp burns 24 hours a day in this temple, which is a symbol of the grace of Maa Maheshwari Devi. Devotees come here not only to worship the mother, but also experience the faith and unity of this historic temple.
