Food items like Samosa, Rasgulla and Noodles, which are students’ favourites, have now been banned in the canteens of university and college campuses. The University Grants Commission (UGC) has issued a letter to all Higher Education Institutes (HEIs) asking them to ban unhealthy foods in the canteens.

UGC’s letter: Only healthy options in the canteen UGC Secretary Prof. Manish R. Joshi has sent a letter to universities and colleges across the country, stating that unhealthy, high fat, sugar and salt (HFSS) foods will no longer be sold in campus canteens. Instead, healthy foods will be promoted, which can have a positive impact on the health of students.
Field check: Unhealthy items are still being sold in the canteen Following the instructions of UGC, the canteens of MMMUT, AIIMS and BRD Medical College were inspected, where high-fat foods like samosas, pakoras, puris, and chola-bhatura were found being sold. Now changes will be made in the menu of these canteens to promote healthy options and serve better food to the students.
NAPI’s request: Focus on students’ health UGC has issued these strict instructions on the request of National Advocacy in Public Interest (NAPI). NAPI says that health issues like obesity, diabetes and non-communicable diseases (NCDs) are increasing rapidly, and the main reason for this is the increasing consumption of unhealthy foods. The health of students can be improved by banning the sale of these foods in educational campuses.
Doctors alert: Fried and sweets are harmful for health Dr. Prashant Asthana, consultant at the district hospital, says that fried and sweet foods, such as samosas, kachoris and rasgullas, may taste good, but they are dangerous for health. Consuming them daily invites serious health issues like heart attack, diabetes and obesity. Therefore, students should avoid such foods and shift to healthier options.
Now these items will not be available in the canteen Following the instructions of UGC, now foods like samosa, noodles, bread pakora, chola-bhatura, rasgulla and puri have been banned in the canteen. In place of these, healthy and nutritious foods will be available, which will boost the physical and mental health of the students.
MMMUT VC Prof. JP Saini said that as per the guidelines, only healthy food will be served in our canteen. There will be no place for unhealthy items.
AIIMS Director Prof. GK Paul said that we have implemented UGC’s instructions in all the canteens of AIIMS. Now foods containing fat and sugar will not be served here.
