First of all know what is Chinese garlic? The name of this garlic is directly related to its country. This garlic is produced on a large scale in China. China sends it from here to other countries of the world. Due to its production in China, it is called Chinese garlic.

Chinese garlic coming to UP via Nepal and Bangladesh Traders are bringing Chinese garlic to UP illegally. It is coming from the routes of Nepal and Bangladesh. Indian traders are bringing Chinese garlic from border countries at cheap prices. The main reason behind the arrival of Chinese garlic is the costliness of local garlic.
Chinese garlic is brought at low rates and sold at a profit of four to five times. Chinese garlic is easy to peel and has thick grains, hence it is in high demand.
Market traders in the capital Lucknow say that this garlic is easily available in the market. Despite this the government is not taking any strict action against it.
16 tons of Chinese garlic seized on Nepal border in one month Customs DC Baibhav Singh, posted on the India-Nepal border, said that in the last one month (August-September), about 16 tonnes of Chinese garlic has been recovered. Security agencies had come to know that a huge quantity of Chinese garlic has been dumped in Nepal.
In view of this, security was increased on the India-Nepal border. On September 21, Lucknow Customs officials stopped two trucks for checking on the Phulpur-Prayagraj highway. 23 tonnes of smuggled Chinese garlic was found in trucks. Its price was said to be around Rs 96 lakh.
Buying from Nepal-Bangladesh at Rs 50-70 per kg, they are selling at Rs 250-300 per kg. Chinese garlic is grown extensively in China. For this, cheap labor is used along with chemical fertilizers and pesticides that increase production. In such a situation, the cost of their production comes down. This is the reason why even after going to other countries, it is sold there at cheap prices.
Traders in Uttar Pradesh secretly buy from neighboring countries like Nepal and Bangladesh at Rs 50 to 70 per kg. But, when it is sold in the market here, its price is kept equal to the local garlic or slightly less than that. It is being sold in the markets of the state at Rs 250 to Rs 300 per kg. Due to higher margins, traders are more interested in selling Chinese garlic.
On the other hand, the market price of local garlic is Rs 300 to Rs 400 per kg. Due to this, traders are directly earning four to five times profit. Since common people are not aware about the difference between Chinese garlic and desi garlic, people are buying garlic from China at the price of desi garlic.

In 2014, the Indian government banned Chinese garlic for these 3 reasons
In 2014, the Indian government banned the import of Chinese garlic from China into India. There are three reasons behind this ban.
1. Excessive use of chemical pesticides: One reason for this was the excessive use of chemical pesticides in the production of Chinese garlic. It is known for excessive use of pesticides. It has been proven in many researches that the use of pesticides in any crop causes serious diseases in those who eat it.
2. The quality of Chinese garlic is not up to Indian standards: Any goods that come to a country from outside are checked for quality. In such a situation, Chinese garlic repeatedly failed the tests of the institutions that check food standards in India. Many times, during testing, chemicals and even synthetic substances were found in the garlic coming from China. These were such chemicals which have adverse effects on human health.
3. Low prices of Chinese garlic caused losses to farmers: The loss suffered by farmers cultivating garlic in the country was a major reason behind banning Chinese garlic. Actually, it is available to traders at lower rates compared to local garlic. Due to this, traders were inclined towards Chinese garlic. Despite the farmers’ garlic being safe and of good quality, people did not buy it. They suffered huge losses due to this.
Madhya Pradesh produces the highest quantity of garlic in the country. Talking about the production of garlic in India, maximum garlic is produced in Madhya Pradesh. Madhya Pradesh contributes 62 percent to the total garlic production of the country. Even in Madhya Pradesh, garlic is grown the most in Malwa region. After this, garlic production is more in Gujarat.
Garlic is cultivated in two crop seasons. In Kharif season, seeds are sown in June-July and harvested in September-October. In Rabi season, planting takes place between September to November and harvesting takes place between February and March.
Demand to ban Chinese garlic has also been raised in America Last year, Republican Senate Rick Scott in the US had written a letter to the Commerce Secretary demanding a ban on the import of Chinese garlic in the UN. In its production, methods that were harmful to human health were used, which was said to be a major reason. America has also accused China of dumping Chinese garlic.
For this, America has been imposing heavy taxes on goods imported from China since the mid-1990s. In 2019, during Trump’s rule, these taxes were increased even further. In his letter, Senator Rick Scott described the quality of Chinese garlic as a serious threat to public health.

Conversation with petitioner lawyer Moti Lal Yadav on this entire matter
Question: How did you get information about Chinese garlic?
answer: Information about ban of Chinese garlic was received through internet and print media. When it was investigated, Chinese garlic was being sold all over Lucknow. This Chinese garlic is mixed with a lot of pesticides. There are huge garlic. Did research on this again. After which a public interest litigation was filed regarding this.
The High Court heard it very seriously. In this, pesticides like pesticides and chlorine are used, which pose a risk of serious diseases. There is a possibility of this causing cancer. The High Court told me to bring Chinese garlic first. Then I bought Chinese garlic from Chinhat market.
I had also bought local garlic. Both garlic cloves were also shown. Then the judge looked at both the garlic cloves in his hand. Then he was called the head of the lab. Instructed them to investigate. The FSDA officer has been ordered to present himself in the court with the lab report within 15 days.
Question: What are the dangers of Chinese garlic, due to which it was banned?
answer: The petition has been filed only after research. The doctor also said that it is very dangerous for health. Consuming it can cause serious diseases like cancer. There are many differences to identify between Chinese garlic and desi garlic. Chinese garlic cloves are very large. The clove of local garlic is small. Secondly, local garlic has roots. But Chinese garlic does not have roots.
Chinese garlic will not have any smell. Local garlic will smell like garlic. Chinese garlic does not have roots. But it is found in local garlic. Chinese garlic is available all over Lucknow. I bought half a kilo of garlic from the vegetable market in Chinhat and reached the High Court. One kilo of Chinese garlic is available for Rs 250. At the same time, local garlic is being sold at Rs 400 per kg.
