The 9th Women’s T20 World Cup is starting from today. Although 10 teams are participating in the tournament, but in terms of strength and form, the claims of England, Australia and India seem stronger than the rest. We have examined the claims of these teams on three factors. These 3 factors are…
1. Record so far in T-20 World Cup 2. Recent form 3. Captain’s record. Starting with the Indian team…
1. India: Chance to end trophy drought
India, which is among the top teams in men’s cricket, also has a top team in women’s cricket, but the team is short of just one ICC trophy in its account. In the last 10 years, India Women’s team has challenged Australia the most and defeated them many times. Under the pressure of big matches, India sometimes lost knockout matches against Australia and sometimes against England and lost the chance to win the trophy. Now the team has a chance to win the first ICC trophy in its history.
Factor-1: Performance so far in the World Cup
Won 56% matches in T-20 World Cup After losing the 2009 and 2010 T-20 World Cup semi-finals, the Indian Women’s team was eliminated from the group stage for the next three times. From 2018, the team again started reaching the knockout stage under the captaincy of Harmanpreet Kaur. The team had to face defeat twice in the semi-finals and once in the finals.
Last two times the team was eliminated by Australia in the knockouts. In tournament history the team played 36 matches and lost 16. However, the team also won in 20. India is the most successful team after Australia, England and New Zealand.
Factor-2: Recent Form
India won 54% T-20 since 2021 Since 2017, India has improved rapidly in both T20 and ODI formats, but the trophy remained away. Since 2021, the team played 69 matches and won 37, however, the team also lost 27 matches. During this period, India scored 180+ 4 times. The team’s run rate was 9.37, while India spent runs at an economy of 6.58.
Factor-3: Strong captain
Captain Harmanpreet won 58% T-20s. India Women’s team has been playing T-20 since 2012 under the captaincy of Harmanpreet Kaur. However, he could get full time captaincy only after the retirement of Mithali Raj. He holds the record of captaining his team in the maximum number of 118 matches in the world. However, in these the team could win only 58% times i.e. 68 matches, in 44 the team had to face defeat.
2. England: Chance to win the second World Cup
England women’s team has more ICC World Cups than men’s cricket. The team has won the ODI World Cup 4 times, but in the case of T-20 World Cup, the team’s performance was a bit lackluster. The team won its first World Cup in 2009, but since then Australia has prevented the team from lifting the title every time. This time the team can end the drought of 15 years in the T20 World Cup.
Factor-1: Performance so far in the World Cup
Won 74% matches in 8 tournaments England has participated in all 8 tournaments so far. The team also became champion by defeating New Zealand in the final in the very first edition, but since then could not get hold of the trophy. England could not even cross the group stage in 2010, but after that entered the knockout stage of 6 consecutive tournaments. However, they had to face defeat 3 times in the finals and 3 times in the semi-finals.
England has played 38 matches so far in the tournament. The team won 73.68% i.e. 28 matches, but they also had to face defeat in 9 major matches. Of these, 6 were knockout matches. One match of the team has also been tied.
Factor-2: Recent Form
75% T-20 wins from 2021 England has been in excellent form for the last 4 years, the team has won the maximum of 42 matches among the top-8 teams. They had to face defeat in just 13 matches. During this period, the team scored at a run rate of around 10 and crossed the score of more than 180 runs 6 times. The team bowled tightly and spent runs at an economy of only 6.70.
Factor-3: Strong captain
Heather Knight won 76% of T-20s. England is captained by experienced Heather Knight, under her captaincy the team has been reaching the knockout stage for the last three consecutive times. Under Knight’s captaincy, the team played 86 T-20s and won 76% i.e. 65 of them. The team had to face defeat in only 19 matches during this period.
3. Australia: Chance to win the 7th World Cup
If there is a rank of most dominating teams in sports, Australia Women’s team will definitely top. The team has 7 ODI World Cup and 6 T20 World Cup titles. No matter who the captain and player are, Australia’s knockout appearance in the women’s tournament is always confirmed. The rest of the teams assume that if they want to win the women’s event, they will have to defeat Australia. Now once again Australia is entering the World Cup as the biggest contender.
Factor-1: Performance so far in the World Cup
lost only one final Australia could not reach the final of the 2009 T20 World Cup, but since then the team has played the final of the tournament every time. In 2016 itself, the team missed out on becoming champion in front of West Indies, apart from this the team lifted the winner’s trophy every time. The team had scored a hat-trick of title wins by defeating South Africa in 2023.
The team played 44 matches in the tournament and won 35. They lost 8 and one match was tied. That means almost 80% of the matches were won. Since 2010, the team has won 83% of the 40 matches in the tournament.
Factor-2: Recent Form
Lost only 6 T20s since 2021 Australia is the second most successful team among the top-8 teams since January 2021. He won 75% out of 48 matches i.e. 36 matches. The team lost only 6 matches, one match was tied, while 5 matches remained inconclusive. That means if we remove the inconclusive matches then the team has won 84% of the matches. During this period the team scored more than 180 7 times. His run rate was more than 9.50 and economy rate was under 7.
Factor-3: Strong captain
Captain Healy won 73% T-20s After the retirement of Meg Lanning, the Australian team will play the tournament under the captaincy of Alyssa Healy. Healy has played 159 T20s for Australia, but he has captaincy experience in only 22 matches. In such a situation, other teams can put pressure on Australia, although even under Healy’s captaincy, Australia has won 73% i.e. 16 matches.
