‘This Game is Not for Individuals, There are 11 Players’, Says Ajinkya Rahane at MCA Felicitation After Irani Cup Triumph – News18
The Mumbai Cricket Association announced a reward of Rs 1 Crore to the Irani Cup-winning Mumbai Team, which brought an end to a 27-year wait with their recent triumph over the Rest of India in Lucknow.
MCA secretary Abhay Hadap made the announcement as an addition to the BCCI’s prize money of Rs 50 Lakh at the felicitation ceremony for the winning side on Monday.
Ajinkya Rahane asserted the essence of the collective in a team sport and lauded his side on the victory.
“There is no secret to success. I am a firm believer of the thought that this game is not for individuals, there are 11 players playing and 4-5 are sitting outside. All the players are equally important,” Rahane revealed.
Rahane shed light on the importance in providing the players the freedom to be themselves and contribute to the side.
“As a captain it is important to give them freedom and confidence because every player in their own capacity is a match-winner. Every player has a responsibility. Those sitting outside can give such inputs which as a captain on the field might not think of,” he added.
Sarfaraz Khan, who produced a man of the match performance in the final shed light on the learnings from the triumph and revealed that he had told his brother Musheer that he would dedicate a ton to him.
“I have learnt a lot at that level,” Sarfaraz shared on experience with the senior side.
“I told him that if I cross fifty, I will make a 200 in which one hundred will be for you,” he said.
Shreyas Iyer who added 57 runs in the game touched upon the camaraderie the side shared and the atmosphere the players intended to create and maintain.
“Every tournament (in which) we go forward, we look to create that sort of camaraderie and that relationship in the dressing room and the bond which we create is the result of all these trophies,” said Iyer.
