The story behind the name ‘The Ashes’… There is an interesting story behind this name. The credit for giving this name to this series goes to the news of ‘The Sporting Times’ and the statement of the then English captain Ivo Bligh, which he gave before leaving for Australia.
In fact, in August 1882, Australia defeated England at home. Then the London-based newspaper The Sporting Times published a condolence message on the death of English cricket, in which journalist Renigald Shirley Brooks wrote, ‘England cricket is dead and the body has been buried. The Australians have taken the remaining ashes home.
Four months later, in December 1882, before leaving for Australia tour, England captain Ivo Bligh said, ‘We are going to take back the ashes that were taken to Australia in August.’ From here the Test series came to be called the Ashes. In December 1882, the England team went to Australia and brought back the Ashes.
