Young men and women roamed from village to village carrying Tesu

In Ghatampur city and surrounding areas, young men and women are keeping this tradition of Tesu-Jhanjhi alive. In earlier times, teenagers used to go from door to door with tesu and cymbals and sing and ask for donations. According to the elders, this is an ancient tradition, which is being given a new color by today’s youth.

As the evening approaches, groups of youth roam around in the streets of the village. They worship Tesu and Jhanjhi and collect toffee, money from the houses. During this, the young men sing, “Tesu atar kare, Tesu matar kare…” while the girls go from house to house carrying cymbals, singing the song “Mor jhanjhiya aur mange…”.

Tesu-Jhanjhi’s marriage takes place on the day of Sharad Purnima. On the day of Sharad Purnima, the marriage of Tesu-Jhanjhi takes place with great pomp and show. This marriage is organized with great enthusiasm in villages, towns and other places. There is a local belief that if there is an obstacle in a boy’s marriage, then he should get Jhanjhi married for three years.

Similarly, if there is a problem in a girl’s marriage, then take a pledge to get Tesu married. It is believed that with the marriage of these two, the obstacles in their marriage will end. This tradition not only completes the incomplete story of love, but also strengthens community unity and culture.
