Jaiswal on Saturday has become the third Indian and seventh batter overall in the world to score more than 1000 Test runs at home in a calendar year.
Star Indian opening batter Yashasvi Jaiswal, who has made a big name for himself since making his international debut against the West Indies in July 2023, joined legendary Gundappa Viswanath and Sunil Gavaskar in an elite list on Saturday (October 26). The 22-year-old left-handed batter became the third Indian batter and overall seventh player in the world to score more than 1000 runs in a calendar year in Tests played at home.
He achieved the feat during India’s second inning of the ongoing 2nd Test against New Zealand at Maharashtra Cricket Association (MCA) Stadium in Pune. Jaiswal, who played his first Test in India on January 25, 2024, against England at Rajiv Gandhi International Stadium in Hyderabad, has scored 1025 runs (when he was on 46 at lunch), in nine Tests played so far in 2024 in India.
The overall record of scoring most runs in a calendar year in Tests played at home is in the name of former Australian captain Michael Clarke, who amassed a total of 1407 runs in 2012. He is followed by Pakistan’s Mohammad Yousuf (1126 runs in 2006), England’s Graham Gooch (1058 runs in 1990), Gundappa Viswanath (1047 runs in 1979), Jaiswal (1025* runs in 2024), Sunil Gavaskar (1013 runs in 1979), and Australia’s Justin Langer (1012 runs in 2004).

During the morning session, apart from becoming the third Indian batter to score 1000 Test runs in a calendar year at home, Jaiswal also became the fastest Indian batter to score 1000 Test runs in India. He needed 1315 balls to cross the 1000-run mark.
Before Jaiswal, the record of scoring the fastest 1000 runs in Tests at home for India was held by Virender Sehwag. The former Indian opening batter crossed the 1000-run mark in 1436 balls, whereas Indian captain Rohit Sharma scored 1000 Test runs in India from 1506 deliveries.

Jaiswal, who has gotten off to a good start in the ongoing match, would like to convert his good start into a big score and help India chase down the target of 359 runs to win the match and level the series.
