It would be 8 o’clock at night when we reached the village. The Deputy Ranger of the Forest Department was sitting on a chair in an empty plot in Jatav Basti. He was waiting for the shift change. Every now and then they roam around the streets and try to find snakes with their equipment. We have installed three big lights at three prominent places in the village, so that there is no darkness. We have distributed pamphlets among the people for awareness. It is written in these that how can one protect against snake bite?
Police and forest department teams deployed in the village at night.
We can’t sleep because of fear Getting up from here, we proceeded through the streets of the village. On the way we found Usha Devi sitting outside our house. We asked – Why are you sitting outside so late at night? On this she says- We spend the whole night like this. Sometimes inside the house, sometimes outside. I feel so much fear. The snake is visible only at night, not during the day. Because of this fear we are not able to sleep. The children are scared. Even the elders are scared. They have safely sent the children to their relatives.
Leaving two houses in the same street, about 7-8 villagers were found sitting on cots on cots outside the house. He said – Our nights have been passing like this for the last 7 days. The fear of snakes is such that no one can sleep. No one can sleep. We all keep talking among ourselves the whole night, so that the night passes comfortably.
Children and women sleeping collectively under a neem tree At 10.30 pm we reached the road next to the Ambedkar statue in Jatav Basti. There is a neem tree here. More than 20 cots were lying beneath it. Most of the children and women were lying on them or talking among themselves. Only two-four children might have been sleeping, everyone else was awake. All of them sleep collectively under this tree every day for the last 4 days. Now the cold has increased. Drops of dew also fall at night. Therefore, a tent cloth has been placed under the tree, so that dew does not drip. A tent merchant from the village has made its arrangements free of cost.

Brother, we are scared, tell us where to go? Why are you people leaving your homes and sleeping under the open sky? In response to this, Angoori Devi sitting on a cot says – Brother, we are scared. 3 died, 3 ate. Tell me where to go? When this happens, the neighborhood will be empty. Policemen also keep guard throughout the night. Media people also come daily. The snake is still not being caught. Don’t dare to sleep at home. That’s why they stay here in the open with their children. Now you tell me what should we do? It’s been 7 days.
If my daughter-in-law and son go away, if I also go away, who will provide fodder to the animals? Rakesh, another elderly woman sitting here, said – due to fear of snakes, half of the children have gone somewhere else from the village. Now tell me whether to work or pay attention here. This fear is not helping. Festivals have come to a head. Children are not able to enter inside the house due to fear. Therefore, we are forced to put cots here and sleep with everyone. Snakes bite inside the house, so we ran outside. Now where should we go after running away from here? My son, daughter-in-law and her children have also left the house and gone out. I have stayed in the village to take care of the animals. If I go away, who will provide fodder to the animals?
