In a move to combat low-quality helmets, The Department of Consumer Affairs (DoCA) has launched a nationwide drive, forcing all the manufacturers and retailers to stop selling substandard products in the country,

The strict decision comes at a time when the country is witnessing a huge black market of low-quality helmets, putting the lives of so many riders in danger for some extra money. These helmets do not offer safety to the riders and do not adhere to the prescribed standards set by the government.

DoCA in Talks with DCs

It has been reported that the DoCA even wrote to District Collectors (DCs) and District Magistrates (DMs), asking them to take action against those who sell non-compliant helmets in the market.

According to the data on record, over 162 licenses of manufacturers have been cancelled or expired. Amid this, a total of 27 searches and seizures have been conducted, where it has been seen that sellers are violating the BIS Standard Mark or Violation of quality control orders (QCO).

Here’s What Rule Says

The Ministry of Road Transport and Highways has already made it compulsory for the sale of helmets that comply with the BIS standard. According to the Bureau of Indian Standards Act, 2016, if anyone is caught using or selling helmets without the above-mentioned certification, they might end up getting two years of imprisonment or at least a Rs 2 lakh fine or both.
