South superstar Suriya discusses his family’s move to Mumbai post-pandemic and his actress-wife Jyotika’s career growth.
Tamil superstar Suriya recently opened up about his family’s post-pandemic decision to relocate to Mumbai, a move that’s changed their lifestyle in unexpected ways. Suriya and his wife, actress Jyotika, now live primarily in Mumbai with their children, Diya and Dev, who are enrolled in local schools. For the family, the shift offers a balance between Jyotika’s career revival and a more grounded lifestyle for their kids, away from the spotlight.
In an interview with The Hollywood Reporter India, Suriya reflected on Jyotika’s move, saying, “Jyotika shifted to Chennai when she was 18 or 19 and lived there for 27 years. She was with me, my family, and she gave up her career, friends, and her Bandra lifestyle. After COVID, there was a need for change.” The move to Mumbai, Suriya explained, has opened more creative opportunities for Jyotika, allowing her to work on diverse projects with fresh perspectives.
He continued, “Jyotika often faces greater challenges. While I always work with great directors, she frequently collaborates with first-time filmmakers. Since our move, she has worked on diverse projects like Srikanth, Shaitaan, Dabba Cartel, and Kaathal: The Core, which feature more interesting writing.”
Suriya admitted that the relocation has improved their family dynamic. “I realised how important it is for women to have their independence and time for themselves,” he said. “Just like men, women need vacations, friendships, and time with family.” Now, Jyotika spends more time with her family and old friends, and Suriya shares that this has allowed her to reconnect with her roots in Mumbai, which has been fulfilling both personally and professionally.
For Suriya, Mumbai offers a refreshing change. With more freedom and anonymity in the city, he enjoys everyday activities like driving with his kids or walking in the park without constant public attention. “My kids are doing well in school, and we’ve seen so many good opportunities here. I balance my time between Chennai and Mumbai, taking around 10 days off each month. During those days, I disconnect completely—no work, no phone calls,” he added.
