As the country prepares to celebrate Diwali this week, the India Meteorological Department (IMD) has forecast light rain and thundershowers in Mumbai and surrounding districts over the next few days.

According to the weather department, starting Wednesday, Mumbai and Thane can expect light rainfall and thundershowers, continuing till Thursday and Friday, respectively. However, no alert has been issued yet.

Meanwhile, in Raigad and Ratnagiri, the IMD has issued a yellow alert from Wednesday to Friday, indicating the possibility of thunderstorms, lightning, and light to moderate showers, along with gusty winds.

Speaking to The Indian Express, Sunil Kamble, director of IMD Mumbai, explained that the expected showers are due to an upper air cyclonic circulation in the Arabian Sea.

“Currently, there is an upper air cyclonic circulation in the Arabian Sea that persists at 1.5 km above sea level. It is owing to this system that we are expecting some rain activity in the coming days. Since a yellow alert has been sounded in Raigad, the system’s effect may bring some light rain and thundershowers in Mumbai as well,” Kamble told.

This latest information also come following the IMD’s announcement of the withdrawal of the southwest monsoon from Mumbai. While some showers have continued since then, the monsoon has gradually receded, leading to rising temperatures in the region.
