On October 31, citizens across the country will celebrate the auspicious festival of lights, as children and adults alike look forward to the day all year. As one of the biggest festivals in Hinduism, Diwali is believed to bring happiness and prosperity to homes with the worship of Goddess Lakshmi and Lord Ganesha. On the day, houses are decorated with diyas and lights to keep the darkness at bay. But what is done with such a quantity of diyas after the festival? Let us know.

Before the day of Diwali, devotees make sure to cleanse their houses and decorate them with lights, diyas and many other stuff, to make them memorable for everyone. Especially during the Lakshmi Pujan, lighting diyas hold a special significance.

So, what to do after the festival? According to astrologer and palmist Vinod Soni Pauddar from Bhopal, many people decide to throw away the diyas. But it is considered inauspicious, stated the astrologer.

As per the beliefs, Goddess Lakshmi resides in these diyas, so discarding it should be avoided. Furthermore, it has several other usages for worship and pujas. The astrologer says that whenever a devotee visits a temple, they can bring a diya with them. It is then to be lit for the worship. This can also be followed if you are visiting the temple in the morning as well as evening.

Five diyas are lit in the worship of Goddess Lakshmi and Lord Ganesha. These diyas are then immersed in the river. This ritual is considered auspicious and is believed to get rid of negativity.

Usually, new diyas should always lit during the festival. If anyone is facing financial issues, they can decorate their homes with old diyas. During the worship of Goddess Lakshmi make sure to bring a brand new diya.

The diyas can also be buried under a tree, immersed in rivers and also could be donated back to the potter. You can keep 5 diyas and distribute the remaining to the children. Such practices are associated with happiness and prosperity, added the astrologer.
