As many as three players—one Indian and two overseas—were retained for more than Rs 20 crore by their existing franchises ahead of IPL 2025 mega auctions. All 10 IPL teams were asked to release their list of retained players ahead of the mega auctions next month on Thursday (October 31), and despite the upper limit of Rs 18 crore set by BCCI, three teams decided to give a few extra bucks to their top players.
Here’s a look at three players who were retained for more than Rs 20 crore ahead of IPL 2025 mega auctions:
Heinrich Klaasen (Rs 23 crore): Sunrisers Hyderabad have retained South African wicketkeeper-batter Heinrich Klaasen for Rs 23 crore. The right-handed batter joined SRH for Rs 5.25 crore in IPL 2023 and scored 448 and 479 runs, respectively, in the last two seasons of the cash-rich league. The 33-year-old Klaasen has made a big name for himself in the shortest format of the game, and after getting retained for Rs 23 crore, he has now become the second most expensive player in IPL history.
Virat Kohli (Rs 21 crore): Royal Challengers Bengaluru retained star Indian batter Virat Kohli for Rs 21 crore ahead of IPL 2025 mega auctions. 35-year-old Kohli has been associated with RCB since the start of IPL in 2008. He holds the record of playing most matches and scoring most runs, 100s, and sixes for the franchise in the cash-rich league. The former India and RCB captain is also the leading run scorer in IPL history, and in the 2024 edition of the cash-rich league, he topped the run scorers list and won the Orange Cap.
Nicholas Pooran (Rs 21 crore): The Lucknow Super Giants have retained West Indies wicketkeeper-batter Nicholas Pooran for Rs 21 crore. The 29-year-old left-handed batter joined LSG for Rs 16 crore ahead of the IPL 2023 auction. Pooran hammered 499 runs in IPL 2024 for the franchise. He has the experience of leading the West Indies in T20Is and has served as LSG captain in quite a few matches. The former MI, PBKS, and SRH star holds the world record for scoring most runs in a calendar year in T20s.
