IPL 2025 Retention: MI, CSK And SRH Retain Core; RCB And PBKS Hit The Reset Button – News18
Last Updated:
The 10 franchises spent a combined Rs 558.5 crore to retain 46 players ahead of the IPL mega auction.
A majority of the IPL franchises kept hold of their core players as they kickstarted their preparations for the next season by naming their retentions today. IPL powerhouses Mumbai Indians and Chennai Super Kings have ensured the ‘big names’ remain part of their fold. Rohit Sharma, Hardik Pandya, Jasprit Bumrah and Suryakumar Yadav – MI’s Big Four – will again line up together when the team begins its quest for a record sixth IPL trophy next summer. CSK will also have a familiar face in MS Dhoni for at least one more season with the ageing warrior looking to write another glorious chapter in his cricketing journey. Alongside him will be his successor Ruturaj Gaikwad who gets another season to prove his leadership credentials and the evergreen Ravindra Jadeja.
Royal Challengers Bengaluru and Punjab Kings though have hit the reset button.
Virat Kohli, Rajat Patidar and Yash Dayal are the three players RCB have retained while releasing the likes of Glenn Maxwell, Mohammed Siraj, Faf du Plessis among others.
PBKS have taken the boldest decision of them all by releasing all but two members of their IPL 2024 squad, and both uncapped. Shashank Singh and Prabhsimran Singh will continue their journey with the franchise which will enter the mega auction with a massive purse of Rs 110.5 crore – the biggest in IPL history.
Then there are the likes of Delhi Capitals, Kolkata Knight Riders and Lucknow Super Giants who have parted ways with their respective captains. Rishabh Pant exits DC after eight years, KL Rahul bids goodbye to LSG after three seasons while Shreyas Iyer’s story with KKR lasted three years during which they won one IPL title.
While Rahul has been shown the door, Nicholas Pooran seems to have become the new blue-eyed boy of LSG after being retained for an astronomical sum of Rs 21 crore.
Sunrisers Hyderabad have been generous with their top performers from the last season having splurged Rs 75 crore to retain the likes of Heinrich Klaasen, captain Pat Cummins, Travis Head, Abhishek Sharma and Nitish Reddy. Similar is the case with Rajasthan Royals but surprisingly, they have let go of Jos Buttler and Yuzvendra Chahal and having retained six players, the former champions don’t have the RTM option either. Theoretically, they can still buy both but can expect stiff competitions from other franchises.
Gujarat Titans have been measured with their retentions having spent Rs 51.50 crore to retain Rashid Khan, Shubman Gill, Sai Sudharsan and Shahrukh Khan. Interestingly, Rashid has commanded the top salary of Rs 18 crore ahead of captain Gill who has been retained for Rs 16.50 crore.
Klaasen emerges as the biggest winner having pocketed a jawdropping salary of Rs 23 crore followed Virat Kohli and Nicholas Pooran – Rs 21 crore each.
Only two teams – KKR and RR – have retained the maximum six players meaning they won’t have any RTM option at the auction. PBKS have the highest number of RTM options – four – and all for capped players followed by RCB’s three while CSK and DC have two each. MI, GT, LSG and SRH enter the auction one RTM each.
