Despite his impactful performance, Salman Khan refused to take credit for the Satish Kaushik directorial.
Tere Naam stands as one of Salman Khan’s most celebrated films where his performance was hailed as one of his finest to date. Beyond its tragic romantic themes that resonated deeply with the audience, Salman’s iconic hairstyle as Radhe Mohan also made waves, inspiring fans to adopt the look at the time. Despite his powerful performance, Salman once modestly declined to take credit for the Satish Kaushik directorial, saying he felt he “did nothing” in the cult classic.
In an old interview with Lehren Retro, Salman Khan talked about his work in Tere Naam, admitting he didn’t feel deserving of the praise he received, especially for the second half. Salman shared that much of the impact came from the screenplay and Satish Kaushik’s direction rather than his performance alone.
“Kuch nahin tha Tere Naam mein. Ek mein baal hain aur ek mein takla. Screenplay bol raha tha. Second half mein maine koi dialogue bola? Maine kuch kiya hai second half mein? Bas yun… (There was nothing in Tere Naam. In one half, I had hair and in the other, I was bald. It was all about the screenplay. Did I say any dialogue in the second half? Did I even do anything in the second half?…[bowing my head down]),” Salman said.
Meanwhile, in a recent interview with Join Films, Indira Krishnan, who played Mamta, the elder sister of Nirjara (Bhumika Chawla) in Tere Naam, shared a memorable experience of filming with Salman. She recalled a playful prank Salman pulled on her just before shooting a scene where she had to slap him.
“Salman pulled a prank on me. He told me, ‘Thoda sa bhi laga na, Indira, toh dekhna mein kya karta hoon. Main hungama macha doonga (If you even hit me slightly Indira, just watch what I’ll do, I’ll cause a huge uproar),” she said.
The warning left her visibly nervous and she admitted her hands were trembling as she prepared for the shot.
She went on to praise Salman’s warmth and kindness on the set. She expressed how his supportive nature made her feel completely at ease.
“But he’s such a lovely person. Itna pyaar diya unhone mujhe! Bahoot comfortably maine kaam kiya unke saath. Mujhe kabhi aisa laga hi nahi ki ye Salman Khan hain. Unka aura hi bilkul alag hain (I felt very comfortable working with him, and it didn’t feel like I was working with Salman Khan. He has a different aura),” she said.
Released in 2003, Tere Naam is a remake of the 1999 Tamil film Sethu.
