‘Has Sandip Ghosh’s Role Been Probed’: Bengal Doctors Question CBI, Announce New Protests – News18
Last Updated:
Junior doctors in West Bengal are protesting the alleged slow pace of the CBI’s investigation into the rape and murder of a trainee doctor, expressing dissatisfaction with the limited scope of the charge sheet.
The West Bengal Junior Doctors’ Forum on November 1 said they were unhappy with the pace of the probe by the Central Bureau of Investigation into the rape and murder of a trainee doctor at Kolkata’s RG Kar Medical College and Hospital, thus announcing a slew of fresh agitations.
Nearly three months after the incident which happened on August 9, the doctors said they were dissatisfied with the probe agency. Referring to the main accused Sanjoy Roy, they said the charge sheet filed before the Supreme Court in the trainee doctor’s murder case named only one person as accused, who was arrested by the police before the CBI took over the investigation on a Calcutta High Court order.
Speaking at a press meet at the RG Kar Hospital, forum spokesperson Debashis Halder said, “We will take out a rally in Kolkata on November 9 from College Square to Esplanade along with members of civil society organisations. There will be similar rallies in different parts of West Bengal. We are also giving a call to light lamps at every locality of Bengal on November 4.”
The doctors also said a mass convention will be held on November 9 on Rani Rashmoni Avenue in the Esplanade area demanding justice for the murdered medic.
At the press meet, Halder said that the junior doctors feel from media reports that the role of “other perpetrators” of the crime has not been fully spelt out in the CBI charge sheet which only named one person directly involved in the crime.
“Has the role of other arrested persons including former RG Kar Hospital principal Sandip Ghosh been entirely investigated?” Halder asked.
Ghosh was initially arrested in a related case of financial irregularities at the hospital when he was at the helm there. He, however, was later linked to the rape and murder case.
Voicing dissatisfaction over the pace of the CBI investigation, Halder said that the junior doctors apprehend that such a probe may help the accused get bail.
“Why such a routine kind of investigation was held? We wish to know what steps the central agency has undertaken against higher authorities in the hospital and whether the sleuths talked to higher-ups in the health department,” Halder said.
He said the junior doctors had organised a rally to the CBI office before Diwali to press for expediting the probe, but given the present situation, they are “forced to intensify” their stir.
Meanwhile, the ruling Trinamool Congress slammed the junior doctors for resorting to agitation again.
Claiming that the agitation by junior doctors is lacking direction, senior TMC MP Kalyan Bandyopadhyay said, “The movement seems to be hijacked by CPI(M) as the junior doctors have no concrete issue any more.” The CBI is investigating the RG Kar incident and the case is sub-judice, he said.
“What is the point in chalking out one programme after another inconveniencing the common man?” he asked.
JUNIOR DOCTORS HOLD TORCH RALLY IN KOLKATA
On October 30, agitating junior doctors along with common people organised a torch rally in Kolkata, demanding justice for the trainee medic.
Representatives of the West Bengal Junior Doctors’ Forum and several civil society organisations took out the procession from the West Bengal Medical Council’s office in Salt Lake’s Sector 3 to the CBI’s office at the CGO Complex in Sector 1.
Shouting slogans like ‘We want justice’, the participants demanded that the CBI complete its investigation into the rape-murder case quickly.
“It’s almost three months since the incident happened. The CBI is still investigating the matter. We want them to quicken their probe,” one of the agitating doctors said.
At the rally, one of the doctors held a clock in his hand as a symbol to demonstrate that time is passing since the crime took place at the RG Kar Medical College and Hospital on August 9, while others held torches and posters demanding that the ongoing probe by CBI be completed at the earliest.
The agitating doctors at the end of their rally announced their decision to switch off lights and light diyas on the night of Kali Puja on Thursday (October 31) to unite brothers and sisters.
On August 9, the body of a woman medic was recovered from the seminar hall of the RG Kar Hospital following which the junior doctors went on a ‘cease work’ across West Bengal demanding justice for the victim and strong security measures in the state-run medical establishments.
