The third and final Test of the ongoing three-match series between India and New Zealand is currently underway at the Wankhede Stadium in Mumbai. At the close of the second day’s play, the visitors managed to score 171 runs for the loss of nine wickets in the 2nd inning, and their total lead has been extended to 143 runs now. The Indian team would like to dismiss the last Kiwi batter as early as possible on the third day and then chase down the required target to seal a consolation win in the third Test.

Ahead of the start of India’s run chase in the fourth inning of the ongoing third Test, here’s a look at the highest successful run chase at Wankhede Stadium in Mumbai:

163 by South Africa (2000): The first Test of the two-match series between India and South Africa in 2000 was played at the Wankhede Stadium, and in that the Proteas managed to chase down the target of 163 runs for the loss of six wickets in the fourth inning to win the match by four wickets. Herschelle Gibbs top-scored for Hansie Cronje-led side by making 46 runs, whereas legendary all-rounder Jacques Kallis remained unbeaten on 36 runs from 129 balls. He added 36 runs for the seventh wicket with Mark Boucher (27) to take South Africa past the finish line.

96 by England (1980): England chased down the target of 96 runs without losing any wicket in the fourth inning to win the one-off Test played against India at Wankhede Stadium in Mumbai. Graham Gooch remained unbeaten on 49 runs, and Geoff Boycott smashed 43 runs from 94 deliveries.

57 by England (2012): The second Test of the 2012 series between India and England was also played at the Wankhede Stadium, and in that as well, Poms beat Team India by 10 wickets after chasing down the target of 57 runs in just 9.4 overs. Nick Compton scored quickfire 30 runs from 28 balls, whereas captain Alastair Cook contributed 18 runs.

48 by India (1984): India’s highest successful run chase in the fourth inning of the Test played at Wankhede Stadium in Mumbai is 48, which it achieved against England in 1984. After taking a massive 270-run lead at the end of the first innings of both teams, Sunil Gavaskar’s men dismissed England for 317 runs in the second inning and then chased down the target of 48 runs in 15.1 overs for the loss of two wickets.

47 by Australia (2001): Australia beat India by 10 wickets in the series opener of the 2001 Test series played at Wankhede Stadium. The Baggy Greens chased down the target of 47 runs in just seven overs without losing any wicket to win the match and go 1-0 up in the series.
