The two men from Rajasthan, who scammed Amazon for Rs 1.29 crore, were arrested by Mangaluru police at the airport, and Rs 11.45 lakh in cash has been recovered from them.

The two men from Rajasthan carried out similar scams in the past, and have cases registered against them in several Indian states.

Mangaluru police have arrested two men from Rajasthan for defrauding e-commerce giant Amazon of Rs 1.29 crore. Raj Kumar Meena (23) and Subhash Gurjar (27), who allegedly carried out similar scams in the past, have cases registered against them in several states, including Assam, Odisha, Maharashtra, Rajasthan, Telangana, Uttar Pradesh, Tamil Nadu, and Kerala.

Modus operandi of the scam

The two developed a distinct strategy to exploit Amazon. They would place orders for expensive electronics along with low-cost items under fake identities in different states. At the time of delivery, one would distract the delivery agent while the other swapped labels, placing the high-value item’s sticker on the low-value product. They would then intentionally provide an incorrect OTP, send the agent back, and promise to collect the order next day – eventually cancelling it. After obtaining the high-end items, they would resell them and dispose of SIM cards.

How did the scam come to light?

The two travelled to Mangaluru and and placed an order on September 21. They ordered two high-end Sony cameras and 10 additional items under a fake name, “Amrith”, for delivery near the KSRTC bus stand.

Upon receiving the items, Meena provided the OTP for the low-value items while Gurjar distracted the delivery agent and swapped the high-value camera labels with those of the cheaper items.

Meena then gave an incorrect OTP, delaying the confirmation process, and informed the delivery agent they would complete the order the following day. They then cancelled the camera order which led to suspicion.

Mahindra Logistics, Amazon’s delivery partner, discovered the label swap and reported it to the company.

Tracking and arrest

Mangaluru City police commissioner Anupam Agarwal said they started a probe after a case was registered at Urwa police station.

“The accused were initially identified by understanding their pattern of ordering through Amazon,” Commissioner Agrawal told The New Indian Express.

Police used CCTV footage from the delivery location to identify the suspects. The two were planning to leave the city when police arrested them at the airport. The police have seized Rs 11.45 lakh in cash from them which they obtained by selling the cameras.
